Sprouted-grain bread offerings in the market have been slowly but steadily on the uptick of late, and a number of health claims have attached themselves to the spongy, nutty-tasting loaves: more digestible, richer in protein and higher in vitamins and minerals compared with other breads. But are the claims true? Yes -- and no. Sprouted-grain products have distinct nutritional advantages over white breads, but when compared to other whole-grain breads, they're usually nutritionally comparable -- although nutrient contents can vary, depending on the sprouts included.

RECIFE, Brazil — The Brazilian state of Pernambuco was once known for its vast plains of parched dirt and roving bandits called cangacos, who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor. For later generations, escaping the widespread poverty of the northeast customarily meant moving to livelier southeastern cities like Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, though many migrants still ended up living in favelas , or slums. Today, an economic boom has given locals good reasons to stay put, and large numbers of Brazilians are even making their way north in search of a better life.

The PSA test should be abandoned as a prostate cancer screening tool, a government advisory panel has concluded after determining that the side effects from needless biopsies and treatments hurt many more men than are potentially helped by early detection of cancers. At best, one life will be saved for every 1,000 men screened over a 10-year period, according to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. But 100 to 120 men will have suspicious results when there is no cancer, triggering biopsies that can carry complications such as pain, fever, bleeding, infection and hospitalization.

For Willie Mitchell , it has been nine years since he just missed out on the chance to play in the Stanley Cup Final, and two years since his hockey-playing future was in serious doubt because of a lingering concussion. So what's another week of waiting for the Cup puck to drop? That may seem like an interminable amount of time for some of his younger Kings teammates, but not for the 35-year-old defenseman. Rest is embraced, not rejected, by the team's "over-35 crowd," Mitchell said.

Cypress Mountain does not care about your aerial ski jumping credentials. Olympic gold medal on your resume? Who cares? Outstanding World Cup form among your references? Yawn. None of it has guaranteed a thing. Not on Cypress. On the men's side, the defending gold medalist as well as the No. 1-ranked aerialist failed to make the 12-man final, both botching their second jumps in qualifying. Evelyne Leu of Switzerland, the defending Olympic gold medalist, also fell by the wayside in women's qualifying, as she somersaulted on her landing and lost her skis.

One way or another, soccer history will be made in Madrid on Saturday. The European Champions League final (11:30 a.m. PDT, Channel 11, FSE) will not only match two of the continent's great teams, Inter Milan of Italy and Bayern Munich of Germany, but also two of the sport's most successful coaches, Inter's Jose Mourinho and Bayern's Louis van Gaal. More to the point, whichever team wins will become only the sixth in history to complete the treble of league championship, domestic cup and European Cup. The only clubs to have managed that feat are Scotland's Celtic in 1967, the Netherlands' Ajax Amsterdam in 1972 and PSV Eindhoven in 1988, England's Manchester United in 1999 and Spain's Barcelona in 2009.

ROME (AP) — Jelena Jankovic lost the Italian Open final to unseeded Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez on Saturday, falling 7-6 (5), 7-5 to the Spaniard's array of touch volleys and drop shots. The seventh-ranked Serb beat hard-hitting Venus and Serena Williams in her previous two matches, but struggled against Martinez Sanchez's clay-court shotmaking in this warmup for the French Open in two weeks. It's the first Tier I title — and third title overall — for the 26th-ranked Martinez Sanchez, a left-hander who beat second-seeded Caroline Wozniacki in the third round and knocked out former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, back on the third rock from the sun the rest of us live on, the Dodgers lost. Lost big, lost like regular mortals and everything. The Dodgers fell 11-4 Wednesday to the Diamondbacks in Phoenix to snap their six-game winning streak. There was no pixie dust on this night, no wide-eyed comeback, just a good old-fashioned derriere kicking.

A just-released update for Mint's iPhone and iPad app lets users take the information graphed out about their spending habits and set their own ranges and limits by sliding the indicator up or down. In addition to being updated for the iPad's new Retina display, the latest Mint lets users spin the pie chart that gives a quick view to categories of spending and drill down detail with a tap. The change I'm most excited about, though, is the ability to personalize budgets.

Hint No. 1 that this was something big. Text messages. "It's one of those signs you've done something unusual," he said. Hint No. 2 that this was something extra big. An outpouring of fan support, post-midnight, adjacent to LAX after the Kings' flight had landed. "It was like driving down a hallway lined with human flesh," he said. "You couldn't see anything except people screaming and Kings jerseys. It was a feeling that not anyone will forget ever, I think on the Kings team.

The voice on the phone was animated, a Kings fan talking about the team's run to the Stanley Cup Final with the passion typical of their loyal, long-suffering audience. "It's been unreal what they've done and what they've accomplished so far," Wayne Gretzky said Wednesday. "It's been unreal for the organization and it's been great for hockey in California and L.A. We live in L.A., so we're seeing it first-hand how fans are rallying around the Kings and hoping that they bring home the Stanley Cup. "It's been fun to watch.

Here's one indication how far the Galaxy has fallen since winning the Major League Soccer Cup six months ago: Last year it led the league with 17 shutouts en route to the title. Wednesday it couldn't protect a two-goal lead for 18 minutes, losing to the San Jose Earthquakes, 3-2, at the Home Depot Center. The game-winner came four minutes into stoppage time when second-half substitute Alan Gordon cut in front of Galaxy defenders A.J. DeLaGarza and Sean Franklin and headed a bouncing pass over keeper Brian Perk.

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The NHL announced the dates for the Stanley Cup finals, starting a week from Wednesday at the home of the Eastern Conference champion. Either the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils, who are competing for the East title, would have home ice because they compiled better regular-season point totals than the Kings or the Phoenix Coyotes. The Kings need one more victory over the Coyotes to earn the West title and the teams will meet Tuesday night at Jobing.

Randy Johnson made what could be the last appearance of his brilliant, 22-year big league career, pitching one inning of relief in the San Francisco Giants' 4-3, 10-inning win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday. Although the Big Unit gave up an unearned run in the seventh that tied the game at 3, Pablo Sandoval provided the go-ahead run when he homered on the first pitch of the 10th inning. It was Sandoval's 25th. The 46-year-old Johnson said Thursday that he'll take his time in the off-season deciding his future.

Nobody has yet used the "c" word — cheating — to describe the imbroglio that has scrambled the testing schedule at Chatsworth High this month. But another "c" word — confusion — has forestalled end-of-the-year revelry for dozens of hardworking students, who will have to retake or reschedule a series of Advanced Placement exams. The official statement from Los Angeles Unified about the testing problems blames "an irregular pattern in conducting" an AP psychology exam last week.
