I enjoyed the Aug. 23 story on Lake O'Hara ("Canada's Beauty Secret") because my husband and I, often with friends and family, have been going there each summer for eight years. I know another beautiful resort in British Columbia (about 200 miles north of Vancouver), where accommodations are readily available. Tsuniah Lake Lodge is on the eastern side of the Pacific Coast Range. It is owned and managed by the Brebner family--Bobbie, Eric and Brian. The lodge has a commanding view of Tsuniah Lake.

The timing could not have been worse for this community of boaters. For months they had been planning a spirited revival of a tradition called the Blessing of the Fleet to unify a city hit hard by Hurricane Katrina. Boaters, fishermen, seafood merchants and residents would honor seafarers who have died and offer prayers for the fleet to bring home a robust catch. But amid the crawfish and T-shirt tables, folks voiced an undercurrent of worry: What now? The ominous gulf oil slick loomed offshore.

Soon enough Dwight Howard will have to make one of the biggest decisions of his career. Seemingly everyone has voiced an opinion about where and what Howard will do when he hits free agency. Rarely has Howard himself gone on record. "It's OK. People are going to talk, and everybody is going to have an opinion on any type of situation," Howard said in a phone interview with The Times. "I totally understand that. " However, before the Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks, Atlanta Hawks and other franchises make their pitches, Howard was far more eager to talk about catching a mackinaw.

The sky was still black over the Gulf of Mexico as fisherman Jeff Howard steered his battered flat-bottom boat from one crab trap to another, frantic to snap up a few more crustaceans before the oil came. He had little time to waste. Stiff winds, rough waters and almost empty traps wouldn't keep him docked. Anything, he figured, was better than nothing. "Today might be the last day you can go," said Howard, 43. "You might not be able to go for another year. Who knows?" As the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico continued to spread Friday, Louisiana's $2.5-billion commercial fishing industry, which provides much of the country's domestic shrimp and oysters, is bracing for a virtual shutdown that could trigger shortages and price hikes for consumers nationwide.

Trout are pretty picky characters. They like their water vodka-clear and their insects served just so. The good news: You can find the fish from the Sierra to Siberia. Here are the best airfares to some of the world's best trout spots: *--* ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND LAX $709 British *--* *--* ANCHORAGE LAX $415 Delta, United, US Airways SNA 545 Alaska, Delta, US Airways BUR 445 United, US Airways LGB 415 Alaska, Delta, US Airways ONT 473 United, US Airways *--* *--* BOZEMAN, MONT.

John Muir said Kings Canyon had everything Yosemite and Sequoia had--granite walls towering over wildflower meadows and ferny forests of giant trees--and yet those two were national parks 50 years before Kings Canyon joined the elite in 1940, after Ansel Adams showed his pictures to Congress.

Thirty-one people drowned and seven were missing after their small boats overturned off the East China coast while they were fishing for baby eels, the official Shanghai Evening News reported Monday. Most of the eel fanciers, who sailed into the open sea in a flotilla of small wooden boats, had no sailing experience, the newspaper said.

Wildlife officials from Oregon and Washington have voted to close spring salmon fishing on the Columbia River to save endangered fish runs. Members of the Columbia River Compact, a board made up of wildlife officials from the states, voted to close the fishing season effective Feb. 16. It is the first fishing ban on the river since the compact was formed in 1918. The closure bans all sport and commercial fishing along 140 miles of the lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam.

State regulators Tuesday banned salmon fishing this year in coastal waters off California, just days after a federal decision to cancel the season for the first time ever. The California Fish and Game Commission voted unanimously to prohibit commercial and recreational salmon fishing in state waters, which extend three miles off the coast. The federal ban approved last week by the Pacific Fishery Management Council applies to U.S. waters extending from three to 200 miles off the coasts of California and Oregon.

Water (from the natural springs at University High School) can be used for a fish pond where students could go fishing (Plugging the Leak, Westside, March 13, 1994). If the water is cold enough, it could be stocked with trout. More likely, it would be necessary to use warm-water species such as bluegill. I would volunteer to teach students something about insect life, fish habits, fly-tying and fishing courtesy. A schedule could be set up in case of overwhelming response, students could be scheduled, or fishing privileges awarded for good school performance or behavior.
