Doctors supervising Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's medical training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center frequently discussed concerns about the Muslim psychiatrist's behavior, including his aggressive proselytizing of patients, a Defense Department official said Wednesday. The problems led the doctors to question Hasan's fitness for military service, but no action was taken in the months before he was transferred from Washington to Ft. Hood, Texas, where he is suspected of opening fire last week on military and civilian personnel, killing 13 and wounding dozens.

Over the summer, Kristina Ripatti-Pearce completed Race Across America, a bicycle relay from Oceanside, Calif., to Annapolis, Md. It's considered one of the most difficult races in the world. But unlike her team members, Ripatti-Pearce faced an added challenge -- the young mother of two is paralyzed from the chest down. A former officer for the Los Angeles Police Department, Ripatti-Pearce was on a routine patrol in 2006 when she noticed a suspicious-looking man walking the streets in South L.A. After chasing him for blocks and then jumping on his back, the suspect turned and shot Ripatti-Pearce at point-blank range.

Norm Baker, vice president of human resources at Zenith, brought the training group in as part of the company's continuing effort to encourage fitness. The program has multiple benefits, Baker said. Stafon Johnson's physique and fitness saved his life. The USC running back was able to survive a weightlifting accident because the muscles around his neck helped him keep open a breathing passage, Dr. Gudata Hinika, trauma director at California Hospital Medical Center, said at a news conference today. "Had that been any one of us, meaning me, I would not have survived," Hinika said. "His neck was so solid and so muscular, that actually helped maintain his airway." Johnson was injured Monday during a weightlifting session.
