OPEN DIVISION Corona Centennial (13-1) vs. Harbor City Narbonne (14-0) at Cerritos College, 7:30 p.m. (TWC SportsNet) : After shutting out a high-powered Crenshaw offense last week, Narbonne's highly regarded defense faces its biggest test yet against a no-huddle, fast-paced offense that has lots of weapons. Centennial's powerful offensive line had better be able to block lineman Paulo Lepua and linebacker Keishawn Bierria. Narbonne quarterback Troy Williams will need to make the right decisions on whether to run or pass against an aggressive Centennial defense.

Troy Starr turns 50 in February. How quickly the years have gone by. He was a fiery 25-year-old assistant coach at Carson High in 1987 when the team was upset by Granada Hills in the City Section football championship game. In 1992, he became head coach at Woodland Hills Taft, taking over a program that had a 0-8-1 record the previous season. He lasted 14 seasons and built the Toreadors into a City Section power. He resigned in 2007 to become the director of football operations for Urban Meyer at the University of Florida.

Griffith Amies of Newport Beach Corona del Mar High came within one field goal of setting a state season record, but he couldn't be too disappointed after the Sea Kings' 35-10 victory over Garden Grove in the Southern Section Southern Division final Saturday afternoon in front of 6,870 at Angel Stadium. The Sea Kings forced two safeties and limited Garden Grove to 82 yards rushing. Junior linebacker Alexander Moore set the tone on the first play from scrimmage by returning an interception 30 yards for a touchdown.

The lady who pulled her pickup truck behind the stands at East Los Angeles College's Weingart Stadium sold all 96 commemorative Franklin High School championship T-shirts in about 10 minutes. She came prepared to sell, but not sell out. Business was that good. "I was waiting a long time for this," the lady said. So were a lot of other people.

There are many high school football teams, but only a few true football programs. Greg Cicero, who will be at quarterback for Servite at 7:30 tonight in the Division V championship game against El Toro at Santa Ana Stadium, knows the difference all too well. Coaches took one look at Cicero when he enrolled at Servite in 1993 and liked what they saw. At 6 feet 4, he would make a good wide receiver, they told him, and that's where they played him on the freshman team.

Welcome back after the off-season from hell. Penn State's torturous timeline, spanning from last November to last week, cast a pall over the sport that could have hardly been fathomed this time last year. Jerry Sandusky's pathetic mug shot, the Freeh Report, Joe Paterno's eradicated legacy and NCAA President Mark Emmert's recitation Monday of unprecedented sanctions have left a football nation dazed and confused. "In one form or fashion it has affected us," Commissioner Jim Delany said in his opening statements this week at Big Ten media days.

Reporting from Eugene, Ore. -- Pac-12 Conference Commissioner Larry Scott opened his state-of-the-league address Friday by saying, "We are very excited to be here … and to have what I know will be a full house, a raucous, loud atmosphere.... That's what we hoped for with this football championship game. " What the conference had also hoped for was a better matchup in its inaugural football title game. Oregon, ranked eighth nationally, rolled to a 49-31 victory over a UCLA team that came into the game with a 6-6 record.

UCLA had everything going its way last Saturday … after its game. The Bruins had stumbled through a 31-6 loss to Utah and were winging west, with players working cellphones and other electronic gadgets for updates on the Arizona State-Washington State game. "I felt bad. I had my head down and then someone came to me and said, 'Arizona State is losing in Pullman,' " linebacker Sean Westgate said. "I went, 'What?' I was so excited. All of us started tracking the game. " By the time UCLA landed, Washington State had finished off a 37-27 victory over Arizona State, giving control of the Pac-12 Conference's South division back to the Bruins — at least temporarily.
