NEW YORK - Pete Carroll is one victory from joining an incredibly exclusive club - coaches who have won both a Super Bowl and a college football national championship. As it is, only Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer have done so. Carroll's USC teams won national championships at the end of the 2003 and '04 seasons. Louisiana State defeated Oklahoma in the 2003-04 Bowl Championship Series title game, but the Associated Press chose USC as No. 1 in its final season poll. USC beat Oklahoma for the 2004-05 BCS title but was later stripped by the NCAA.

Troy Starr turns 50 in February. How quickly the years have gone by. He was a fiery 25-year-old assistant coach at Carson High in 1987 when the team was upset by Granada Hills in the City Section football championship game. In 1992, he became head coach at Woodland Hills Taft, taking over a program that had a 0-8-1 record the previous season. He lasted 14 seasons and built the Toreadors into a City Section power. He resigned in 2007 to become the director of football operations for Urban Meyer at the University of Florida.

The lady who pulled her pickup truck behind the stands at East Los Angeles College's Weingart Stadium sold all 96 commemorative Franklin High School championship T-shirts in about 10 minutes. She came prepared to sell, but not sell out. Business was that good. "I was waiting a long time for this," the lady said. So were a lot of other people.

There are many high school football teams, but only a few true football programs. Greg Cicero, who will be at quarterback for Servite at 7:30 tonight in the Division V championship game against El Toro at Santa Ana Stadium, knows the difference all too well. Coaches took one look at Cicero when he enrolled at Servite in 1993 and liked what they saw. At 6 feet 4, he would make a good wide receiver, they told him, and that's where they played him on the freshman team.

Saturday's high school football championship games: Santa Ana Mater Dei (11-2) vs. Bellflower St. John Bosco (13-0) at Angel Stadium, 8 p.m. Prime Ticket, 830 AM: It could be a rainy, muddy night for the Pac-5 Division championship game, and that could create some intriguing moments when each team's big offensive line tries to grind out drives. Mater Dei lost the first meeting, 24-2, in the Trinity League. Coach Bruce Rollinson will have his players fired up, but unless the Monarchs' defense puts pressure on quarterback Josh Rosen, the Braves will be tough to topple.

The NFL Network aired a terrific documentary this week commemorating the 100-year anniversary of the forward pass. Georgia Southern obviously didn't watch it. In a game that would have made Darrell Royal and Woody Hayes proud, Georgia Southern of the Football Championship Subdivision not only shocked Florida, 26-20, the Eagles did it without completing a "forward" pass. Georgia Southern handed Southeastern Conference-power program Florida, arguably, its most embarrassing loss … ever?
