A 63-year-old Fullerton man has entered the race for president, billing himself as the common-sense choice for people who are fed up with political jockeying and government waste. Democrat Frank Legas paid $1,000 and filed papers Wednesday to be included on the ballot for the New Hampshire primary. Legas, who has lived in Orange County since the early 1970s, said he decided to seek the country's highest political office because he wants to build public trust of the federal government.

Among nine state legislative races this year, five involve candidates who are unchallenged in their primaries and therefore will move up automatically to the general election. Incumbents heading for showdowns in November include state Sen. Rob Hurtt (R-Garden Grove) and Assembly members Jim Morrissey (R-Santa Ana), Marilyn C. Brewer (R-Irvine), Bill Campbell (R-Orange) and Dick Ackerman (R-Fullerton). Most of the districts are solidly Republican. Brewer didn't even draw a Democratic challenger.

These candidates have filed to run in the June 2 primary for national, state or county offices. Asterisks (**) indicate incumbents; those retiring or leaving office because of term limits or to run in other races are in parentheses. Candidates for seats where an eligible incumbent did not file have until Wednesday to complete their paperwork. Those races are 4th District supervisor, district attorney, sheriff-coroner, assessor and auditor-controller.

It is a delightful political position for Dick Ackerman. In the swirl of the campaign season, he doesn't really have to campaign. The two-term Republican assemblyman from Fullerton is using lawn signs recycled from his first race. His campaign war room is a room at home. "I have no radio spots, no TV," he noted. In fact, Ackerman mulled long and hard before grudgingly digging into his political piggy bank to finance a lone district mailer "to keep my name out in front of folks."
