Once again, someone sees something in Freddie Bradley they believe everyone else missed. And once again, that someone can make a dramatic difference in Bradley's life. Bobby Beathard of the San Diego Chargers, among the most astute of NFL general managers, picked Bradley in the seventh and final round of April's draft, drawing puzzled looks when he announced the name of an unheralded running back from winless Sonoma State.

Freddie Bradley's return to the football field has been stalled, at least for another year. The record-setting running back from Hueneme High and Moorpark College did not meet NCAA academic eligibility requirements to play for Sonoma State this season, Coach Frank Scalercio said. Bradley, 23, sat out last season while recovering from a knee injury he sustained during a pickup basketball game and aggravated during spring practice.

Freddie Bradley's final college football season has been placed on hold. Bradley, a record-setting running back at Moorpark College in 1989 and '90, will apply for a medical redshirt year to allow his sore right knee to heal, officials at Sonoma State said Thursday. Last week, in his first appearance for Sonoma since transferring to the Division II school from Arkansas, Bradley gained 24 yards in five carries against St. Mary's. However, in succeeding days, his knee was extremely sore.

Former Moorpark College All-American running back Freddie Bradley was acquitted Tuesday of charges that he and a former University of Arkansas teammate raped a 13-year-old girl. A jury heard Bradley and Derrick Martin, both 22, deny they had sex with a teen-age girl who said she consented to the acts. The girl was 13 at the time of the incident last April, and Arkansas law defines sex with a partner under the age of 14 as rape even if the partner is willing.

Freddie Bradley must believe in making a good first impression. The freshman returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown Saturday in Moorpark College's opener, much to the amazement of East Los Angeles Coach Al Padilla. "To start off the game like that is a real shock treatment," Padilla said. Bradley made a lasting impression on Padilla by scoring his second touchdown on a 25-yard reception with 32 seconds left in the first quarter.

It was the night of Nov. 2 and George Machado's emotions already were seesawing. A fierce wind was not enough to blow Compton College out of Moorpark's Griffin Stadium on Saturday afternoon, but the Moorpark ground attack was. The Raiders sent Compton defenders skittering away like so many tumbleweeds in the face of a ground game that piled up more than 500 yards as Moorpark won, 60-7, in a Western State Conference Northern Division opener. The whipsawing wind would have played havoc with the passing game, had Moorpark chosen to pass.
