Chivas USA Coach Robin Fraser will gladly take his turnarounds wherever he can get them. So although some may look at Saturday's 1-1 tie with the Seattle Sounders as a disappointment, Fraser said he was happy to at least escape with a point. After all, when you're coaching a team that has lost 38 times in less than 21/2 seasons, a tie can look pretty good. "It is what it is. At the end of the day, we got a point," Fraser said. "We certainly could have had three points out of it. Look at it however you want.

Nate Jaqua and Fredy Montero scored in the first half, and Lamar Neagle added an insurance goal in the second, giving the Seattle Sounders a 3-1 victory over the Galaxy in a U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal game Wednesday night at Tukwila, Wash. The Sounders, who are seeking their third consecutive U.S. Open Cup title, will host FC Dallas in a semifinal Aug. 30. Only the New York Greek Americans (1967-69) have won three Open Cups in the tournament's 98-year history. Adam Cristman scored for the MLS-leading Galaxy, eliminated in the quarterfinals by Seattle for the second season in a row. Jaqua, who had five goals for the Sounders in last year's U.S. Open Cup, scored his first one of this year's tournament late in the fourth minute.

Eighteen minutes into his Major League Soccer debut, Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Perk faced a decision: Left or right? Perk chose right, literally and figuratively, and blocked Seattle Sounders forward Fredy Montero's penalty kick to preserve a scoreless draw. "Just looking at him, I thought he was a crafty player," Perk said. "Thought he'd show me one way and then go the other. That's what he did. Lucky I guessed the right way. " The penalty kick came after Montero took a shot that appeared to be destined for the back of the net until the elbow of Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez deflected the ball directly to Perk.

Zach Thornton shut out the Seattle Sounders for the third straight time, helping Chivas USA to a scoreless tie Saturday. Thornton earned his 10th shutout to snap a tie with Houston's Pat Onstad for the MLS lead. Both teams earned a point to keep them in the playoff mix. Seattle is 9-6-11 with 38 points, while Chivas stayed one point behind at 11-9-4. Thornton beat the Sounders 2-0 and 1-0 earlier this season, and had to work for his third clean sheet. In the 15th minute, he got his hand on a shot by Sebastien Le Toux from the top of the 6-yard box to deflect it wide of the far post.
