The last time Argentina's Diego Armando Maradona walked off the field after a World Cup game, it was in disgrace. That was four years ago in Barcelona, Spain, where Maradona was tossed out for blatantly kicking a Brazilian opponent in the groin. The foul, a retaliatory act, was the result of pent-up frustration after Maradona himself had been the target of one brutal foul after another throughout the tournament.

MANCHESTER, England — "That," Carli Lloyd said "was crazy. " And it was. Even for a women's soccer team that has made last-second goals, overtime heroics and nailbiting finishes commonplace, the United States' 4-3 overtime victory over Canada in the Olympic semifinals Monday was difficult to believe. Three times the Americans trailed and three times they rallied — the last time with the help of an unusual series of calls from Norwegian referee Christiana Pedersen. Goalkeeper Hope Solo gave up more goals to Canada's Christine Sinclair in 51 minutes than she had against four entire teams in these Olympics — yet it was her sparkling save on Sophie Schmidt in the closing seconds of regulation that sent the game into overtime.

The Mission Viejo High School girls' soccer team defeated Mater Dei, 2-0, Wednesday to win the Ocean View tournament at Ocean View High School. The Diablos, who extended a two-year unbeaten streak to 53 games, outshot the Monarchs, 18-2, for the game and controlled the second half. The scoreless first half was another story.

He is one of the most lethal strikers in the history of European soccer, which puts him on a level with the all-time greats of the game worldwide. But Ukraine's Andriy Shevchenko is virtually unknown in the United States. And unlike David Beckham, who is marketed ad infinitum in the U.S. but has yet to win much of anything, Shevchenko has a long string of honors and awards to his credit. Beckham can bend it, but "Sheva" can put it in the net.

No longer torn between two sports, Kerrie Clavadetscher hopes to become more effective in one. If her performance Saturday in the L.A. Watts Summer Games is any indication, the Chaminade High senior-to-be is well on her way. Clavadetscher figured in every goal in two soccer matches and the Eagles beat North Torrance, 3-0, in the first round and Peninsula's B team, 1-0, in the quarterfinals and advanced to today's 8 a.m. semifinal match against Ayala, a 1-0 winner over the Peninsula A team.

There must be an even higher source than the "Lord of All Indoors." Steve Zungul's career with the Sockers certainly did not end in storybook fashion Wednesday night. Actually, there was something ironic and almost eerie about Zungul ending his career with the Sockers as a goalkeeper.

Temple City High School defeated Newport Harbor, 1-0, on a disputed free kick Friday at Newport Harbor to advance to the semifinals of the 1-A boys' soccer playoffs. Efram Diaz scored the goal with 26 minutes left in the match on a free kick from 20 feet out and to the left of goal. Diaz kicked the ball as the referee was moving the Newport Harbor "human wall" of defenders.

The all-purpose, welcome-to-the-soccer-team e-mail: Dear Tiger Shark parents, Welcome to another season of youth soccer. We begin this season as we begin every season, with excitement over the new friends we will make and the experiences we will share. First, let me just thank all the parents who have volunteered to pitch in to help the team in every way possible. Actually, not a single person has stepped up yet, but I still have high hopes. For selfless dedication is the lifeblood of a volunteer-based league like ours.

If you're not intimately familiar with big-league soccer or why David Beckham became so famous in the first place, watch this video. The seven-minute clip shows more than two dozen of Beckham's free kicks for goals, mostly when he played with Manchester United and Real Madrid before the Englishman joined the Galaxy in 2007. The video has been viewed more than 8 million times and for good reason. Beckham's free kicks were a sight to behold, with the ball streaking into the net with a speed and right-to-left arc that looked like a Zack Greinke curveball.

I enjoy reading Grahame L. Jones on soccer, but his commentary of March 6, ridiculing the proposal of "any" change to the size of goals for Major League Soccer, should earn him a yellow card for writing that is dangerous to the continued existence of MLS. The article fails to analyze the key question: Will increased scoring bring in more fans? If it will, the innovation should be adopted. The arguments put forth by Jones against any change in the size of goals are flimsier than a $10 soccer ball.
