Frito-Lay, the giant snack-foods company, said it would open a distribution center in Sylmar that will employ more than 100 workers when it opens next spring. Said Mayor Richard Riordan in a statement: "This project is another example of the outstanding work being done by L.A.'s Business Team to . . . create new economic opportunities in our city." The 70,000-square-foot Frito-Lay plant will be built on part of a planned 88-acre business park by Royal Clark Development Co.

Taco Bell and Frito-Lay will venture into the nation's supermarket aisles this spring with a line of products designed to capture part of the rapidly growing Mexican foods market. In May, the two companies--both owned by soft-drink giant Pepsico Inc. in Purchase, N.Y.--will test-market a line of Taco Bell brands at grocery stores in Ohio and Georgia. Taco Bell and Frito-Lay might eventually expand the line for sale through convenience and warehouse stores.

Eating potato chips with olestra, the new fat replacement, may have some couch potatoes running to the bathroom more often than expected. A consumer group charged Monday that 192 people who ate chips with olestra in three Midwestern cities where the olestra chips are being test-marketed--Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Grand Junction, Colo.; and Eau Claire, Wis.--later suffered diarrhea and other stomach ailments.

Frito-Lay plans to open a potato chip plant in Visalia next year, increasing the city's work force by as many as 150 people. The Texas-based subsidiary of PepsiCo Inc. said it will begin manufacturing Lay's and Ruffles potato chips in a plant where Eagle brand snacks used to be made. Anheuser-Busch closed the plant a year ago. Frito-Lay will renovate the plant at a cost estimated as high as $60 million. City enticements included the waiver of $300,000 in sewer hookup fees.

The crunch stays, along with the spicy cheese taste and the orange stuff that rubs off on your hands and lips. But Frito-Lay Inc. said a new formula for nacho cheese Doritos will make an important change: less Dorito breath. "It turned out to be a pleasant side benefit" of a new seasoning," said Stephen Liguori, vice president of marketing at Plano-based Frito-Lay. The "nacho cheesier" Doritos will hit stores May 2.
