Halloween is my favorite time of year. And I love to be scared. Over the years, I've been through my fair share of theme park mazes, independent haunted attractions and backyard spookfests. I even dress up every Halloween as a chainsaw-wielding maniac in a hockey mask and scare the neighborhood kids at the haunted house on our block. So I like to think I've seen it all - from the mundane to the extreme. But I've never experienced anything like McKamey Manor . > Photos: Inside the McKamey Manor backyard haunt in San Diego On Friday night I went through the backyard haunt tucked behind the three-bedroom, brick-and-stucco home of Russ and Carol McKamey in an otherwise ordinary San Diego subdivision near Poway.

FOR THE RECORD: An earlier version of this article said singers Usher and Sean Combs paid $100,000 a month to lease this Malibu house. Although it rents for that amount, the terms of their leases were not disclosed. The Cape Cod-inspired two story, built in 1994 and sitting on more than half an acre, has 80 feet of beach frontage, a front lawn and gardens.

Downtown Los Angeles could really use more public dance sequences. Typically the stuff of choreographed big-screen fantasies that probably haven't been seen in this part of town since Joseph Gordon-Levitt's giddy turn in"(500) Days of Summer,"synchronized public movements just don't pair well with traffic, crowded streets and concrete. Yet there many Angelenos were on Saturday afternoon, twisting to perky instructions from "So You Think You Can Dance" judge Mary Murphy on a broad, inviting chunk of grass that now resides between Grand Avenue and Hill Street.

Two stuntmen pretending to be propelled by an out-of-control rocket backpack for a movie scene were injured early Saturday when they were catapulted off the front lawn of the Griffith Observatory and over a cliff. Jim Madieras, 50, was critically injured when he was thrown headfirst into a tree about 50 feet down the steep embankment, authorities said. Michael Sarna, 25, suffered less serious cuts to his face when he landed in bushes 25 feet down the slope.

Just as he was shocked to find a burned cross on his front lawn last week, Michael Coffey was surprised Sunday to find about 50 people standing there saying he is not alone in his fight against hate crimes. "If haters act to isolate a neighbor with hate, citizens are going to insulate that neighbor with love," said Frank Eiklor, who organized the rally. He is the president of Shalom International, an anti-bias organization in Costa Mesa.

Thank you, whoever you are, for the most beautiful 4th of July sight in many years. After being the only one in my block to display the American flag on holidays for many years, it was a joyful surprise to look up and down the 100 North Formosa Avenue block and see a flag flying in every front lawn on both sides of the street. To the students at Dwyer Middle School in Huntington Beach, the grassy area below the stairs is the spot. For Nina Nguyen, 13, it was where she was asked out by a boy for the first time. For Mark Elvidge, 12, it's where he met his first friend at the school. It's where students socialize before and after class, where physical education classes are held and where middle school culminates for the eighth-graders. The annual promotion ceremony has been held on the lawn since the school was built in 1933, parents say. But future memories might be dimmed because the Huntington Beach City School District plans to install solar panels on the front lawn.

With water supplies dwindling and sustainable design gathering steam, Janet and Larry French of Hungtington Beach gazed out at their front lawn and decided to replace it. With what, they didn't really know. So they hired Culver City architect Adam Wheeler to brainstorm a smart alternative. Wheeler, who worked for Frank Gehry before starting his firm six years ago, recognized the flat, featureless lawn for what it was: wasted space that could be more functional and attractive as an extension of the interiors.

Aweek ago Sunday, my husband and I spent the day knocking on doors and apologizing to our neighbors. The night before, I had called 911 for an ambulance to transport our schizophrenic son to the hospital. Again. He didn't want to go. Again. He pushed me away from the phone and began raging at the 911 operator as we ran from the house. Almost immediately, there were two police officers on our front lawn. Our son stood in the kitchen, shouting at them to leave. They called for backup; four, then six officers on the front lawn.

One would be hard-pressed to find anything traditional about Matt and Erin King's new house in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Santa Monica, just north of Venice Beach. Its dynamic design stands out so much from its suburban neighbors that local kids have dubbed it the "James Bond house." But more significant than the home's modern looks is the way it greets the street.

Anti-Semitic fliers appeared on dozens of front lawns this week in heavily Jewish neighborhoods, Los Angeles police said Wednesday. About 20 residents near Chandler Boulevard and Coldwater Canyon Avenue have turned fliers over to police, although many people may have just thrown them away, Det. Ted Knott said. A white supremacist group claimed authorship of the fliers. Police are investigating the distribution of the fliers as a hate incident, Knott said.

The San Fernando Valley might have once been referred to by Frank Zappa as " . . . a real nice place to bring your kids up." If only this were still true. How do you experience a quality way of life when different neighbors have: A fleet of airport vans on the front lawn . . . A cabinet maker working out of his garage . . . City trash cans that never leave the curbside . . . An old sofa in the driveway . . . . . . and I am referring to Woodland Hills, south of the boulevard!

Residents can legally drink alcohol on their front lawns again--as long as they live in a single-family home and not in an apartment or condominium complex. The change came as city officials sought to better define "public places" for the municipal alcohol code. Laws against drinking in public have been on the municipal books since 1977, but the city has had trouble winning convictions because its definition of public places was unclear.
