Bob Hunt has 60 fruit trees in his yard, but he harvests more than 80 different types of fruit. The Anaheim gardener boasts a number of "fruit salad" trees, which bear more than one type of fruit. Hunt can grow that many different fruit types on that many trees because of grafting, which adds a living piece of one plant, usually a stem or branch, to another closely related plant.

As unsold holiday junk is cleared from store shelves the day after Christmas, nurseries around Southern California will be filling up with bare-root fruit trees. The thought of apricots, cherries and plums alone could make your mouth water. Put the trees in the ground in January and you will have blossoms by March. Some trees, such as 'Anna' apples, may even fruit the first season.

Rare and exotic fruit trees are becoming a lot less rare in Southland yards these days thanks to the efforts of Bill Nelson and others who are making the public aware of the excitement of growing them. Nelson--through his Pacific Tree Farms--has long been a pioneer marketer of exotic tropical and subtropical fruit trees. We visited Nelson recently to discover what's going on in the world of exotic fruit trees. Here are some of his observations.

All fruit trees need proper watering and fertilizing, but the key to goodproduction for deciduous fruit trees may surprise you. How well a tree fruits in the summer depends on how you prune it in January. This month--while they're dormant--is the perfect time to prune many summer-bearing fruit trees such as peaches, plums, apples, nectarines and apricots.

An elephant weevil, a tiny insect that attacks wine crops and fruit trees, was intercepted last month at the Los Angeles-Long Beach port complex in a container of oranges from Australia, officials said. It was the first time the pest had been found in the United States. It attacks roots, stems and fruits of cultivated vines, and also feeds on citrus, blueberry bushes and fruit trees. "Had this pest gone undetected, it could have had a serious impact on the California wine industry," Todd C. Owen, Customs and Border Protection director of Los Angeles field operations, said in a statement last week.

We are in the middle of winter and should be halfway through our chores. If you were going to plant bare-root roses or fruit trees, they should be in the ground by now--they are going on sale at many nurseries and the bare-root plants are beginning to leaf out. (If you want to take advantage of the sales, it's not too late to plant. Simply snap off sprouts and plant because new growth will replace the old.) You should be pruning roses and fruit trees right now.

The Jewish holiday Tu B'Shevat is a celebration of the bounty of nature, usually commemorated by eating fruit and planting trees. But members of Valley Beth Israel, a Sun Valley Conservative synagogue, added a new tradition Sunday, distributing fruit trees to dozens of families from the surrounding community in a symbol of sharing that they hope will bear fruit for years to come. About 80 families -- enrolled in the Roscoe Canyon Child Care Resource Center, which operates a Head Start program in facilities it leases from the temple -- signed up to receive apple, orange, apricot, peach and nectarine trees, which were donated by Tree- People, a nonprofit environmental group.

This Pasadena compound, with a house, guesthouse and separate guest studio set in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, was built with a craftsman's eye for detail and a passion for nature and art. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, the main house was designed by owner Larry Lenander and his wife, Alma Thomas. Rebuilt from an 1887 Victorian home, it was renovated from the studs up in 2002 and transformed into a modern Craftsman. "I'd been in construction for a long time and wanted to do our version of a Craftsman," Lenander says.
