Something you wouldn't say to Tom Arnold: "Hey, Tom, how are contract prospects looking?" Word is that Arnold's contract with Fox Sports Net, which pays him $1.1 million a year and expires in April, will not be renewed. An FSN spokesman, calling Arnold an asset to the network, said negotiations with Arnold would take place in a few weeks. But a source said Arnold is as good as gone. What would become of "Best Damn Sports Show Period" without Arnold?

The regional sports network that brings games involving Southern California teams into your living room has played a confusing name game over the years. Now the past is its future. The network started out in 1985 as Prime Ticket. No problem there. Prime Sports was not as good but OK. Then Fox took over and the confusion began with the name Fox Sports Net West. Viewers weren't sure what the difference was between Fox Sports and Fox Sports Net.

With the Dodgers committed to Channel 9 next year, Channel 13 has cut its Dodger broadcast schedule this year from 50 games to 25. "Because this is our last season of carrying the Dodgers on KCOP, we wanted to lessen the impact on our network and regular program schedule," spokesman John Frenzel said Friday via e-mail, "so we reduced the number of games." FSN West 2 has agreed to carry an additional 25 games this season, for a total of 125, Dodger owner Frank McCourt said.

Boise State's dramatic 43-42 overtime victory over Oklahoma in Monday's Fiesta Bowl, originally televised by Fox, will be reshown three times tonight as an edited one-hour special on FSN West. The special, titled "Best Damn Instant Bowl Classic," will air after the Arizona-Washington basketball game at around 9:30 p.m. and again at 11 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. Tonight's UCLA-Oregon State game, originally not scheduled for television, will be televised on FSN Prime Ticket at 7.

A routine news release sent by FSN publicist Emily Corliss included this eye-catching sentence: "On our pregame show, 'College Football Saturday Kickoff,' we will be discussing why John David Booty is BETTER than Matt Leinart was at USC." The word better was capitalized for emphasis. And that raises this question: Is FSN serious? A phone call was placed to Billy Ray Smith Jr.
