The House Ways and Means Committee approved and sent to the full House today a temporary $70-billion increase in the nation's debt ceiling--enough to allow the government to keep operating until Oct. 31. The increase, at the request of the Treasury Department, would hike the debt ceiling from its current $2.8 trillion to $2.87 trillion.
