The shuttered storefronts have been replaced by some 40 upscale restaurants, jazz clubs and bars. The tattoo parlors, pawn shops and antique stores have given way to boutiques, sidewalk cafes and luxury apartments. After two decades of redevelopment, Fullerton's once sleepy downtown has become a destination for the young, hip and well-heeled. About the only thing Fullerton's suddenly trendy central district lacks is a high-rise.

Among the best of these shopping districts is the stretch of Harbor Boulevard in old Fullerton from Commonwealth Avenue to a hop beyond Chapman Avenue. Here and along finger streets and alleyways are dozens of gems inside buildings that date to the 1920s. That alone should put you in a different mind-set. A requisite kids' stop is CM School Supply (210 N. Harbor Blvd.), filled with educational and art toys, books and yard equipment. There's even a section for infants.

The two deaths inside a Fullerton home have been blamed on a 40-year-old man who fatally stabbed a 12-year-old girl and then committed suicide, police said Wednesday. The relationship between Damian Camillo Flores and Janette Jimenez, whose parents rented him a room, had increasingly concerned her family before their bodies were found Tuesday afternoon, Sgt. Linda King said. Last month, she said, Janette's parents had asked Flores to move out, and he was in the process of doing so.

Scott K. Yoshizumi, whose Cerritos-based Concord Capital Inc. promised returns of 2% to 4% a month, didn't contest a civil fraud lawsuit filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

It was never a secret. Chevron officials have planned for more than 30 years to develop the rolling Coyote Hills on the northern edge of Fullerton -- once the site of bountiful oil wells -- and build hundreds of new homes. Maybe the city's 126,000 residents forgot or figured it would never happen, hoping their once-rural town could cling to its last major stretch of open land even as homes sprung up all around. But it soon might.
