The 17-year-old senior at Redondo Union High School is one of six teen girls sipping colas and munching pizza in a West Los Angeles corporate boardroom. They're here because they're cool.

The Children's Literacy Program at Laguna Hills High School began with a maid crying at a dinner party in Los Angeles. Just before her senior year, Golnaz Alemi saw the distressed maid and went to see if she could help. "She told me that one of her kids was demoted a grade because he had failed English," Golnaz said. Realizing that the maid's struggle was not unique, she decided last fall to start the first-of-its-kind program in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District.

Barbra Streisand's grand wedding to James Brolin a few weeks ago inspired a comprehensive, photo-filled People magazine spread, which, in turn, prompted us to think about that Donna Karan gown she wore. It was long, white, had a veil, showed a lot of cleavage, and got us wondering: Was it the best look for La Streisand? So we solicited your opinions on this extremely important matter. Responses were pretty evenly mixed, pro and con, with only a few catty comments.

The late John Huston, who directed "The African Queen" and other classic films, became an Irish citizen in his later years. Huston wrote in his autobiography that his first trip to Ireland was for a fox hunt with friends. When Rosie O'Donnell set out to make her mark in daytime talk, she modeled "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" after the chat fests of daytime pioneers Merv Griffin and Mike Douglas. An unabashed fan of all things television, O'Donnell, 35, grew up enthralled with Griffin's Emmy-winning show, which was seen in syndication and on CBS from 1965 to 1986. Griffin, 72, also created the long-running game shows "Jeopardy!"
