Gabe Kapler (Taft High, Moorpark College) was named Southern League player of the week for the second time this season, but he hasn't paused to enjoy the honor. Kapler, an outfielder, continued his tear Sunday, going four for six, including his ninth home run for Jacksonville. After a slow start, Kapler is batting .313 with nine homers and a league-leading 62 runs batted in.

Gabe Kapler (Taft) of the Jacksonville Suns was player of the week in the double-A Southern League. Kapler, a 57th-round pick of the Detroit Tigers in 1995, was nine for 21 (.429) with two home runs and 13 runs batted in. The 22-year-old outfielder's .307 average is fifth in the league, and he leads the circuit with 20 RBIs. Last season, he led the Class-A Florida State League with 40 doubles and 65 extra-base hits for Lakeland.

Gabe Kapler (Taft High, Moorpark College) and Robert Fick (Newbury Park, Cal State Northridge) have helped Jacksonville, the Detroit Tigers' double-A Southern League affiliate, to a nine-game winning streak. Kapler hit a three-run home run and drove in four runs Monday, raising his batting average to .319. The right fielder has driven in 13 runs in 11 games. Fick, a catcher, led the Midwest League with a .341 average last season. He is batting only .205, but has four doubles and a triple.
