A Conejo Valley elementary school student has been selected to represent her peers on a statewide reading committee. Jamie Hendry, a fourth-grader at Lang Ranch Elementary School in Thousand Oaks, is one of 15 California children on the "California Page Flippers" Kids Advisory Council. Jamie will help encourage other children in Ventura County to read outside the classroom, and will serve as a liaison between California's children and the READ California program, a statewide initiative.

When the dust cleared after the Jan. 17 earthquake, St. John's Hospital and Health Center looked like a bad accident. The north wing of the 1940s structure was lost, and only outpatient services have been available for the last eight months. Now, the historic building has been patched up and is ready to reopen. The community will celebrate with a big "Bouncing Back" party Saturday, 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Billy Vera and the Beaters will perform a free concert.

Simeon Rogers has signed a letter of intent to attend Cal State Fullerton, Titan hurdles coach Chris Asher said Friday. Rogers, from Victor Valley High in Victorville, won this year's Southern Section Division II championship in the 300-meter hurdles. SOCCER * Nicole Price, a 1997 graduate of Edison High, will play women's soccer next season at Vanguard University, formerly known as Southern California College, Coach Scott Dameron announced. Price, a defender, played at Pepperdine last year.

Children from a youth club were treated to a golden opportunity Thursday at a new Beverly Hills store. Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson and other star athletes joined about 40 sports fans from the Long Beach and West Valley Boys & Girls Clubs for a sneak peek of a new athletic products store, "Niketown Los Angeles."

Kim Oden's Team Sony Autosound continued its dominance of the Pro Beach Volleyball League on Sunday at Manhattan Beach by defeating Gabrielle Reece's Team Nike, 15-8, 16-14, to win its seventh tournament of the eight played this season. In the men's division, Scott Fortune's Team Sony Autosound defeated Bob Ctvrtlik's Team Naya, 18-16, 15-7, to win its first tournament.
