As USC's basketball practice finished Friday, an unfamiliar face joined the players in a huddle. Trojans Coach Kevin O'Neill introduced the man as the greatest player in the program's history. "I want you all to meet Harold Miner," he said. Miner's No. 23 jersey will be retired at Sunday's USC-UCLA game at the Galen Center. A large photo of him already hangs in the corner of the practice arena. "I really miss being around the game," Miner said later. "I've been away for a long time.

As shot after shot went in the basket Tuesday morning, any doubts about Lazeric Jones' effectiveness were sunk. The UCLA point guard made 41 of 50 shots ranging from 15 to 17 feet, according to Coach Ben Howland , showing that the ruptured tendon Jones sustained on his right middle finger should not be an issue when the Bruins play USC on Sunday at the Galen Center. "He shot it well, and I think it's given him confidence, 'I'm going to be able to play with this,' " Howland said.

As the top-seeded team in the NCAA men's volleyball Final Four, UC Irvine appears primed for a possible run to its third title in six years. Could this be the last hurrah for Coach John Speraw at Irvine? Speraw, a former UCLA player and assistant, has been regarded as the favorite to succeed Al Scates in Westwood ever since Speraw left the UCLA staff to take over at Irvine after the 2002 season. Scates coached his final match last month, concluding a 50-year tenure at UCLA that included 1,239 victories and 19 NCAA championships.

It was this kind of day for the USC basketball team. When the ubiquitous "fan cam" was used for the first time at the Galen Center, the first fan shown was wearing UCLA blue and holding up a No. 1 finger. At least we know the camera operator is honest. The loudest, and only, ovation from the home crowd came when the Trojans' NCAA men's water polo champions were introduced. "Can they suit up and play basketball?" a fan muttered. On an afternoon when USC was beaten badly in every part of the game, the Trojans lost to UCLA, 75-59, on Sunday.

The UCLA-USC game used to be a high-class buffet for the NBA. Four players who participated in it last season were drafted in the first round, and three more the year before that, including Kevin Love and O.J. Mayo. This year, with the league having pecked both rosters clean, the game was more greasy spoon than gourmet feast Sunday night, making the Trojans' 68-64 win -- their first ever over UCLA at the Galen Center -- a faint vision of what used to be. "We don't have those type of huge recruits," UCLA senior guard Michael Roll said recently.

Julian Jacobs, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound freshman guard for USC had been recruited to be a Trojan by then-Coach Kevin O'Neill, who played a style of basketball where if either team scored 50 points it seemed as if the scoreboard at Galen Center might explode. On Sunday, Jacobs had five dunks during a public scrimmage USC held at Galen Center. Under O'Neill he might not have had five dunks all season. It was the first time USC fans could see the makings of the team new Coach Andy Enfield will put on the court when the Trojans open Nov. 8 at Utah State, a bit of a scheduling challenge Enfield said he wouldn't have chosen.

USC basketball players James Blasczyk and Dewayne Dedmon have been suspended indefinitely from all team activities for violating team rules and will sit out the Trojans' Pac-12 Conference tournament opener against Utah, interim Coach Bob Cantu said Monday. Police in Spokane, Wash., are investigating a fight that occurred early Sunday. Witnesses have told police they believed USC players were involved, a police spokesman said Sunday. Neither Spokane police nor USC has identified any Trojans players.

With every step he takes, with every dunk he makes, Omar Oraby is growing into a basketball star. USC's 7-foot-2 center played as if he was every inch of that Tuesday in the Trojans' 76-62 win over Cal State Fullerton at the Galen Center. Guard Byron Wesley continued his quiet dominance for USC, wiggling free for layups and leading the Trojans (3-1) with 22 points plus adding eight rebounds, but Oraby stood tall with his six blocked shots, nine rebounds and 15 points. Wesley finally shut down any hopes the Titans (2-2)

Louis J. Galen, a financier who was a leading figure for decades in the savings and loan industry and a philanthropist closely tied to his alma mater, USC, died Monday at his home in Rancho Mirage after a brief illness, his family said. He was 82. Galen, who had struggled lately with heart problems, perhaps was best known in recent years for spurring the construction of USC's 10,258-seat sports-and-entertainment arena on Figueroa Street, the Galen Center.

USC's men's basketball team, hoping for significant improvement after the worst season in school history, will have 29 of its 31 games televised on either ESPN, FOX, CBS or the Pac-12 Network, the school announced Wednesday. The Trojans are coming off a 6-26 season in which multiple starters suffered season-ending injuries. USC finished with only six scholarship players. Coach Kevin O'Neill is hoping that the return of players such as guard Jio Fontan and 7-foot forward Dewayne Dedmon and the addition of transfers such as forward Renaldo Woolridge will make the Trojans contenders for an NCAA tournament berth.
