Police used tear gas and foam pellets early Sunday to battle a crowd that gathered after suspected gang members beat a passerby in an apparently racially triggered assault, police said. A white motorist who drove near a picnic breaking up in the northwest part of the city was attacked by blacks who appeared to target the man because he is white, said Sgt. Mike Daily. The man was treated for minor injuries, Dailey said.

A tiff between rival gangs at Lake Tahoe escalated into a shooting that put one person in the hospital and at least 10 more in jail, the Douglas County Sheriff's Department said Wednesday. Sheriff's Sgt. Ross Chichester said a group called the BNG gang contends that members of the South Side 13 tried to run them down Monday night on U.S. 50 in the South Lake Tahoe area.
