A 25-year-old Tustin man is in custody after being accused of stabbing another man to death in the stomach late Sunday night, police said. Ubaldo Gutierrez, of Tustin, is suspected of stabbing the still-unidentified man at 10:29 p.m. inside a home in the 11000 block of Mount Drive in Garden Grove, authorities said. Police and firefighters, responding to a 911 call, said they found the victim with a single stab wound to his stomach. He was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange for surgery, but died at around 5 a.m. Monday.

A 42-year-old man pleaded guilty Friday to firing a Glock more than 50 times  at the Fashion Island shopping center in Newport Beach and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Mark Gurrola, of Garden Grove, pleaded guilty to 54 felony counts of shooting at an occupied building and two additional felony counts of aggravated assault, with sentencing enhancements for using a firearm, the Orange County District Attorney's office said. Prosecutors wanted a longer prison sentence, officials said.

Three civic leaders will be honored for their contributions to the community at the sixth annual Tapestry of Garden Grove event March 25. Though the Rev. Robert H. Schuller was the face of the once-global "Hour of Power" television ministry, he was never alone. His wife, Arvella, was always behind the scenes, working to make sure everything ran smoothly. Arvella Schuller, who served as a producer of the television show and was one of the main creative forces of the Crystal Cathedral, died Tuesday at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange after a brief illness. She was 84. In a statement, her grandson, Bobby V. Schuller, said she died "peacefully of natural causes.

The colorful Tet festival is going mainstream, moving beyond the borders of bustling Little Saigon to a sprawling county fairgrounds where it is expected to attract thousands who never ventured into the Vietnamese American district. Police said they have a person of interest in custody in connection with separate assaults on five women that occurred on a single day in Garden Grove and Anaheim. The man was taken into custody at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the 6100 block of Robin Way in Buena Park, said Garden Grove police Lt. Ben Stauffer. But authorities will not officially name a suspect in the assaults until victims positively identify him, Stauffer said Saturday. They did release a composite sketch of the suspect.

A married couple from Garden Grove who investigators suspect died in a murder-suicide were identified Monday by Orange County coroner's officials. Thanh Vuong, 51, and Yvone Tran, 39, were found with gunshot wounds Thursday in their home in the 1500 block of Sail Avenue. Paramedics pronounced them dead at the scene. Police went to the house after receiving a 911 hang-up call from the home at 4:16 a.m. A male relative called the Garden Grove Police Department shortly after and said a family member may have shot his wife and then himself.

A 55-year-old man died Friday night after being struck while he was crossing a Garden Grove street in a wheelchair, authorities said Saturday. Leonard Christian was wheeling himself across the eastbound lanes of Chapman Avenue near West Street around 11 p.m. when he was hit by an SUV, according to Garden Grove police. Christian was not in the marked crosswalk. The driver, Juan Lopez of Santa Ana, did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol and has not been cited for a traffic violation, police said.

Organizers of the largest Tet Festival in the U.S. - an event long linked with Garden Grove - are not only moving the event, but also undertaking a robust marketing campaign in hopes of luring more immigrants and vendors to the festival's new home at the Orange County fairgrounds in Costa Mesa. For weeks, a team led by Nina Tran, president of the Union of Vietnamese Students Assns., which organizes the festival, scoured neighboring cities for a replacement venue after Garden Grove officials demanded more money to help host the event.

Investigators believe a Garden Grove man fatally shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself Thursday morning in an apparent murder-suicide. Police received a 911 hang-up call from the home of the couple in the 1500 block of Sail Avenue at 4:16 a.m. A male relative of the couple then called the Garden Grove Police Department and said a family member may have shot his wife and then himself. When officers arrived at the home they found a 39-year-old woman and a 51-year-old man with gunshot wounds, police said.
