There were two minutes left in Friday night's football game between Garden Grove and host Westminster High School. In Garden Grove's last offensive play -- a long pass -- senior fullback Kevin Telles, 17, charged up from the 30-yard line to block his opponents. Then he abruptly fell, face down and motionless, on the 25-yard line. Several witnesses said he collapsed without sustaining a hit from another player. When he didn't get up, coaches from both teams rushed onto the field with the team physician as Telles began to convulse.

The only sign of Christmas in the small apartment of Alejandro Salinas is a makeshift tree fashioned from construction paper and taped to a bookshelf. There would be no tree this year, no presents for the six children who call the one-bedroom apartment home. "I don't have very much money," said Salinas, a 37-year-old carpet cleaner. "I don't have money to buy presents. The kids asked for a Christmas tree, but I had to tell them maybe next year."

Five alleged gang members were arrested Thursday in connection with the shooting death of a 16-year-old student near a Garden Grove high school, officials said. Jesus Antonio Guererro, a laborer from Santa Ana, and Armando Dejesus Solano, a painter from Garden Grove, both 20, were being held at Orange County Jail in lieu of $1-million bail each. Three boys -- 17, 16 and 14, unnamed because of their ages -- are being held at Orange County Juvenile Hall.

"Comedy," Steve Martin used to say, "is not pretty." But to a group of performers in the Orange County area, comedy today is downright unspeakable. Between Andrew Dice Clay's jokes about the male anatomy and others joking about sex acts, "it's all just disgusting," said Adam Christing, his angry words belied somewhat by his stage costume--a tuxedo jacket and decidedly mismatching surfer jams.

Garden Grove police have arrested four high school students in the slaying of a 14-year-old who was gunned down last weekend after taking a cab home from an Internet cafe. The investigation is continuing, but police are treating the killing of Edward Fernandez as gang-related, said Sgt. Mike Handfield of the Garden Grove Police Department. Fernandez was not connected to gangs, but the suspects have ties to local gangs and are believed to have acted in concert to kill the youth, Handfield said.

Garden Grove won its first league title in eight years as much with a basketball as a football. The Argonauts won it as much in the bleachers as on the field. It was Coach Kris Van Hook's unfashionable off-season conditioning program--in which lazy afternoon basketball games and idle bleacher runs were transformed into perform-at-all-costs drills--that instilled a winning mentality in Garden Grove's players and set the tone for the team's resurgence.
