It's a Rocktober redux for the Colorado Rockies, who are back in the playoffs after a one-year hiatus. Aaron Cook pitched four-hit ball over eight innings in his second start since missing a month because of a sore shoulder and Garrett Atkins drove in three runs for the Rockies in a 9-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday. The Rockies' fourth consecutive victory eliminated Atlanta, their final pursuer, from contention for the NL wild card. Colorado can still win the NL West title by sweeping a weekend series at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers signed utilityman Doug Mientkiewicz and shortstop Angel Berroa to minor-league contracts that include invitations to major league spring training. First baseman John Lindsey , outfielder Prentice Redman , and pitchers Francisco Felix , Juan Perez and Josh Towers also were signed to similar deals. Mientkiewicz made the Dodgers' opening-day roster as a non-roster player this year, only to dislocate a shoulder two weeks into the season. Initially told by doctors that he would be out the remainder of the year, Mientkiewicz returned in time to play 13 games in the final month of the season.

PHOENIX -- The Colorado Rockies figured it was only a matter of time until their high-powered offense started producing. That time came on Sunday, when Clint Barmes, Matt Holliday and Garrett Atkins homered and the Rockies routed Arizona, 13-5, ending the Diamondbacks' winning streak at eight games. "We've got a good team and I think we're going to put it together here very soon," said Barmes, who came off the bench to drive in four runs. "I think today was a big start. It was definitely one that we needed."

PHILADELPHIA -- You can take the kid out of L.A., but you can't take L.A. out of the kid. Unless, that is, the kid is Chase Utley, who would no sooner brag about himself than play second base naked. Utley is a metronome, a three-time All-Star and the most popular player on the Philadelphia Phillies, by far. In a town that eats its stars, he is beloved. He left L.A. without the Hollywood ego. He never had one. He shows up early every day, works hard, plays hard and deflects attention onto others.
