The “electric” stuff of 24-year-old Garrett Richards has won the confidence of Angels Manager Mike Scioscia, who Saturday gave Richards Tuesday's home start against the Kansas City Royals over slumping veteran Jerome Williams. “I definitely get more confidence as I get more chances,” Richards said in the Angels Stadium tunnel between the clubhouse and dugout. “I feel good about what I'm doing. I'm repeating my delivery, trusting my stuff.” The Angels have won in five of Richards' six starts.

DETROIT - It didn't seem like the most logical move for the Angels to choose right-hander Garrett Richards to start Tuesday night's game against the Detroit Tigers over left-hander Brad Mills. Mills appeared to earn another start when he allowed three hits over five shutout innings of a 6-0 victory over Baltimore on July 8, the day before the All-Star break, while Richards was torched for 12 earned runs and 19 hits in 8 2/3 innings of his previous two starts with the Angels, on June 30 and July 5. But the Angels went with the bigger arm and the better stuff, and that decision paid off when Richards allowed three hits in seven shutout innings of a 13-0 win over the Tigers, overcoming control problems that led to four walks and a hit batter.

DETROIT -- Police confirmed to a local television station late Tuesday night that a bomb threat was made against Comerica Park about an hour into a game between the Angels and Detroit Tigers. There was an explosion all right, but it was provided by the Angels offense, which enjoyed its most prolific game of the season in a 13-0 shellacking of the Tigers, busting out for a season-high 18 hits and five home runs, including tape-measure blasts by Mike Trout and Mark Trumbo. Albert Pujols, Alberto Callaspo and Kendrys Morales also hit home runs and the Angels' bats matched the sizzle of the weather -- 100 degrees with 33% humidity at game time.

After arguably his worst night as a major league pitcher, Garrett Richards was optioned to triple-A Salt Lake City on Thursday night. Richards gave up 10 hits and seven runs in 4 1/3 innins the Baltimore Orioles, needing help from the bullpen and an offensive outburst from his teammates to avoid his second loss of the season. "Garrett's starts have been a little short recently," Manager Mike Scioscia said after the Angels' 9-7, come-from-behind victory. "It became apparent tonight that we needed another arm this weekend.

Not even two weeks ago, Mike Scioscia was fielding questions about the difficulty of choosing between effective right-handers Garrett Richards and Jerome Williams as the fifth starter in a deep and talented rotation. “Believe me,” the Angels manager said on June 24, “we're not going to lament having six starting pitchers who are throwing the ball well when most teams are looking for three.” Oh, how Scioscia would love to have three quality starters right now. Richards was throttled for seven runs in 41/3 innings Thursday night, the team's third shoddy start in three days, but the offense bailed him out in a 9-7 come-from-behind victory over the Baltimore Orioles in Angel Stadium.

When Jerome Williams is eligible to come off the disabled list July 4, the Angels will have an extremely difficult decision: Do they return Williams, who was 6-5 with a 4.46 earned-run average before being hospitalizedJune 18 because of breathing problems caused by an asthma attack, to the rotation? Or do they keep Garrett Richards , who on Sunday delivered his fourth straight strong start since being promoted from triple A in late May, giving up three runs and nine hits, striking out five and walking two in 62/3 innings of a 5-3 interleague victory over the Dodgers?

Jered Weaver will come off the disabled list to start Wednesday night against the San Francisco Giants, Angels Manager Mike Scioscia said Monday, a move that could lead to the demotion of Garrett Richards to triple-A Salt Lake despite Richards' 2-0 record and 0.86 earned-run average in four games. If that happens, Weaver will feel Richards' pain. Weaver was 4-0 with a 1.37 ERA in his first four big league starts in late May and early June of 2006, but when Bartolo Colon , the 2005 Cy Young Award winner, came off the DL in mid-June, Weaver was sent back to Salt Lake.

Garrett Richards' expiration date in Anaheim might be coming this week, but the rookie right-hander was by no means sour Sunday. Richards contributed eight scoreless innings in what could have been his final replacement start for ace Jered Weaver, helping the American League's leading pitching staff claim its league-best ninth shutout and give the Angels a second straight 2-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. "I'm up here to take advantage of my opportunities," Richards (2-0)

LANGSTON, Okla. — The words were vintage Mike Garrett, reminiscent of something he might have said to a gathering of USC boosters a decade ago, before all the trouble started. "The only thing I know is winning," the former longtime Trojans athletic director said Thursday in a place half a country and a world removed from Heritage Hall. Then he paused. "I hate losing," he continued, drawing out each word for emphasis. All that was missing was a cardinal-colored tie and a two-finger victory salute.
