Gov. Steve Merrill on Tuesday proposed suspending New Hampshire's 18-cent-a-gallon gasoline tax for most of the summer tourist season. Merrill's surprise proposal would eliminate the tax from Memorial Day through July. The Republican governor estimated that the $24 million in lost revenue would be more than made up in other state collections from tourists--spending on lottery tickets, liquor, rooms and meals.
