Bill Gates may not be involved with the day-to-day operations of Microsoft Corp. anymore, but he's still got plenty of opinions about the company he founded nearly four decades ago. "There's a lot of things like cellphones where we didn't get out in the lead very early," the 57-year-old billionaire, who serves as chairman of the software giant, said in an interview on "CBS This Morning. " When cohost Charlie Rose asked why, Gates replied: "Oh, that's too complicated. We didn't miss cellphones, but the way we went about it didn't allow us to get the leadership.

Market Quote, a first-time starter in the fourth race at Santa Anita on Sunday, was left in the gate for nearly three seconds but was able to overtake the field for the victory. The 4-year-old daughter of After Market was making her debut for trainer John Shirreffs in a mile race on turf for maiden fillies. She balked when the starting gate opened. By the time she started running after urging from jockey Joe Talamo, she was 10 lengths behind in a field of nine. “Right when the gate opened, I think it scared her,” Talamo said.

As the sold-out crowd of 45,050 roared at the start of the pre-race rider introductions at the supercross series' season opener at Angel Stadium, one rider was noticeably missing: James Stewart. At first no one was quite sure why Stewart, the series champion in 2007 and 2009, was not on his Yoshimura Suzuki motorcycle. After all, the Floridian had posted the fastest time during qualifying. But it turned out that during practice Stewart also had twisted his right knee, so he used the time during the rider introductions to ice and elevate the knee.

The protesters at the palace gates provided the starkest sign yet of the country's deepening political volatility. Dissidents shoved aside a barbed-wire barricade and riot police fired tear gas to push back the crowd.
