When you watch Derek Jones play basketball, minutes and halves and sometimes an entire game will pass without it crossing your mind that he was not supposed to be able to do this. Jones' comeback from the shotgun blast to his left side that critically wounded him in August of 1987 has been so successful that sometimes, for a while, you can forget what he has accomplished. And on occasion, you could almost forget what he has come back against.

It was the kind of victory that made the phones ring in the Cal State Fullerton women's basketball office. The Titans are off to their best start in years, a fact that was rather unnoted until Fullerton beat UCLA, 68-51, Saturday. That got some attention. Never mind that the Bruins are 3-3 or that Fullerton had more impressive victories last season, including two over San Diego State. A victory over UCLA in any sport gets a Fullerton team noticed.

Jill Matyuch is the designated three-point shooter on the Cal State Fullerton women's basketball team, which plays Montana tonight in Missoula, Mont., in a first-round game of the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. tournament. She's also the starting shortstop on the Titan softball team--not to mention the team's ace at drawing interference calls. And if you want to stretch things a bit, she jokes, she's the leading scorer for the volleyball team: She's the official scorekeeper on the sidelines.
