The Detroit Pistons acquired Derrick Coleman and Amal McCaskill from the Philadelphia 76ers in a trade Wednesday for Corliss Williamson. The 76ers made it clear they wanted to deal Coleman, who has two years and $9.5 million remaining on his contract. If the Pistons want to release him after one season, they will owe him $2 million. By moving Williamson, with $18 million and three guaranteed years left on his deal, the Pistons will have more money to make moves in a year or two.

The Clippers and center Michael Olowokandi on Tuesday were no closer to reaching an agreement on a long-term contract extension worth more than $80 million. Olowokandi's agent, Bill Duffy, set a deadline for today for re-signing with the team. Neither Duffy nor the Clippers would comment Tuesday, but the deadline is expected to come and go without an announcement of a new contract.

In an NBA draft loaded with uncertainties, we can say right now that the Clippers had the best day of any team Wednesday. After finishing the day's big trade, the Clippers can claim to have something none of the other teams gambling on a high school player has: a known commodity. Call it the value of name-Brand recognition. Maybe Kwame Brown, Eddy Curry or the kid the Clippers picked second and traded to the Chicago Bulls, Tyson Chandler, will be the rookie of the year.

The Clippers began life without Stanley Roberts on Thursday, which shouldn't be too difficult a transition since they never had much of one with him. In five seasons, he played in at least 65% of the games only once, in 1992-93 after being acquired in trade from the Orlando Magic. A ruptured right Achilles' tendon cost him most of 1993-94. A ruptured left Achilles' tendon cost him all of 1994-95.

Center Stanley Roberts was suspended indefinitely and fined by the Clippers Tuesday after shouting profanities at Coach Bill Fitch at the end of practice Monday night. "He really jumped on coach," said a player who witnessed the argument. "It wasn't called for. I didn't see the need for an explosion. I think Stanley was just a little frustrated." Roberts had complained earlier Monday that the Clippers forced him to play last season with bone spurs that required surgery at the end of the season.

Bruce Springsteen's "Better Days" blared over the Sports Arena public address system during a timeout with 2:01 left in the fourth quarter of the Clippers' season-ending 124-102 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday before an announced sellout of 16,021. After finishing with the NBA's worst record (17-65), the Clippers can only hope the song proves prophetic.
