As a little girl in Ohio in the mid-1800s, Genevieve "Gennie" Jones would accompany her country doctor father in his buggy as he visited patients. Along the way they'd discuss the natural world, which turned into a lifelong passion. Then in 1876, consumed with heartache from a broken engagement, Jones traveled to the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. Here she viewed John James Audubon's masterpiece, "Birds of America. " Inspired by the beautiful watercolor drawings, she returned home with a new sense of purpose, determined to create a companion book illustrating birds' nests and eggs.

The title implies a cheeky slap at sentiment, but "I Hate Valentine's Day" comes from Nia Vardalos, the plucky writer and star of the highest-grossing romantic comedy in film history, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." Nobody should be too concerned that cornball lovey-doveyness is in for a trip to the woodshed.

Bill Schumacher knew his wife was dying. Genevieve, the first woman he ever kissed, the mother of his six children, his wife of 52 years, was in a coma. Only a respirator sustained what life remained in her frail body. So Schumacher made his pact with God. He prayed that Genevieve would go quickly. And, in return, Schumacher made a promise--he would become a priest. On that day in 1984, Bill Schumacher was 75 years old. 'I Am Ready Now' God kept his end of the bargain.

There were teenage zombies running around St. Genevieve High in Panorama City this week as part of homecoming activities, their faces red and their T-shirts torn. Michael Jackson's "Thriller" is the homecoming theme, and that could be the motto for Southern California's only 7-0 football team. That's a remarkable achievement for any program -- especially one with seven losing seasons this decade. And it fits in with the success story of a Catholic school that has gone through a transformation, if not a resurrection, over the last 10 years.

The dance teams and choir at St. Genevieve High School in Panorama City count plenty of boosters on their home turf and one very important supporter 3,000 miles away -- former President Jimmy Carter, who chose the students as one of two scheduled acts to perform today at his 85th birthday party. Carter and St. Genevieve first kindled a relationship four years ago after Principal Daniel Horn and several students addressed a conference on character education in Atlanta and decided to travel to Plains, Ga., to hear the former president speak.

With classes in Mandarin, overseas trips to China and France, bus transportation for commuters and individualized fitness instruction that includes salsa and tai chi, new students at St. Genevieve High School quickly come to realize that things are a bit different at this Panorama City campus. A recent daylong pep rally celebrating 157 incoming freshmen that featured singing, dance routines, speeches and a pancake breakfast served by upper classmen sealed the deal. The school has gained a reputation as one of the most innovative high schools in Los Angeles -- one that is bucking the trend of many other urban Catholic schools that have closed or are teetering on the brink due to crumbling facilities and declining enrollments.

Some transit advocates attend meetings. Others write letters. Some even picket outside subway stations. Numan Parada makes maps. At a time when a subway-to-the-sea along Wilshire Boulevard is still far from a reality, he is plotting it on a map anyway. With the click of a mouse, he puts a notch next to the Getty Center on the rail line he envisions branching off Wilshire Boulevard to follow the 405 Freeway corridor to the San Fernando Valley. "That's a good place for a station," he said.

Consumers now have an array of "natural" insect repellents from which to choose. These are made from benign-sounding plant extracts or oils such as citronella oil, soybean oil, peppermint oil, cedarwood oil, lemon grass oil and geranium oil. What consumers don't always have is proof that they work. Many natural insect repellents, deemed "minimum-risk pesticides" by the Environmental Protection Agency, are exempt from safety testing because their active and inert ingredients have been deemed safe for the intended use. These ingredients have been used for long enough in consumer products that they're generally regarded as safe, says Scott Carroll, director of Carroll-Loye Biological Research Consulting, an independent company that does extensive testing on insect repellents.
