George Berg quickly summed up his second-year starting quarterback, Scott Bertoni. "If Scott was 6-foot-3, people would be lined up on his doorstep," the Fountain Valley coach said. "He has the arm velocity, good speed and escapability, but he's a 'tweener." At 6-1 1/2, 180 pounds, Bertoni may not be tall enough to attract some Division I college recruiters, but his numbers speak for themselves.

It was a cheesecake.

Prep football Lance Neal was named the football coach at Fountain Valley, Athletic Director Mike Henigan said. Neal replaces George Berg, who resigned at the end of last season. Neal, 32, has been a defensive coordinator the last 10 seasons, nine years at Irvine and last season at Capistrano Valley.

DL FOUNTAIN VALLEY JR. It was no surprise the 6-2, 230-pound Fano was named the Sunset League defensive lineman of the year. Not when 19 of his 42 tackles were for minus yardage. Fano also had three sacks and recovered a fumble. "He is a great technician of the game," Coach George Berg said.

Fountain Valley High School assistant coaches Guy Carrozzo and George Berg, Bishop Amat head Coach Don Markham and La Canada head Coach Steve Silverman are the final candidates for the position of head football coach at Ocean View High, John Webb, the school's activities director, said Wednesday. The finalists will be interviewed Friday by a panel to consist of Webb, Athletic Director Tim Mennealy and Principal John Myers. An announcement is expected to be made Monday, Webb said.

George Berg of Ojai was awarded the California Library Assn.'s 1996 President's Award for his efforts to find funding sources for the Ventura County library system. Berg, a retired engineer, led two campaigns to pass a parcel tax benefiting the Ojai Library. The first campaign failed in November 1995 by a small margin. Berg spearheaded a successful second campaign in March, which has allowed the Ojai Library to open daily and increase hours from 24 to 55 per week.

Simi Valley motorists are advised to avoid the westbound Madera Road off-ramp on the Simi Valley Freeway today through Friday because of ongoing construction work, officials said. The off-ramp will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, Thursday and Friday, said George Berg, a city traffic engineer. Road crews will be completing work on the widening of the Madera Road overpass, he said. Commuters are urged to use the First Street off-ramp instead.

The westbound off-ramp of the Simi Valley Freeway at Madera Road in Simi Valley will be intermittently closed to motorists Tuesday through Friday for construction work, city officials said. The off-ramp will be closed between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., said city Traffic Engineer George Berg. The closure will allow road crews to restripe a portion of Madera Road between the freeway off-ramp and Cochran Street. The work is part of a $3.

Simi Valley officials will conduct a ceremony today to mark the completion of a $3.4-million road widening and reconstruction project on First Street between Los Angeles Avenue and the Simi Valley Freeway. The event begins at 4 p.m. at the northwest corner of First and Cochran streets. Construction began in August, causing portions of the street to be closed temporarily.

Junior quarterback Scott Bertoni threw four touchdown passes as Fountain Valley routed Ocean View, 47-0, in a Sunset League game Friday night at Westminster High. Bertoni threw just 12 passes, completing eight, but four of the completions went for scores in a 15-minute span of the first half. Mark Ziemke caught scoring passes of 39 and 12 yards and Bryan Gail counted a 30-yard scoring pass among his four receptions.
