For 40 years, the suave British secret agent has been a cultural icon, ever since Sean Connery first burst on the screen like a sexual panther in "Dr. No" and identified himself as "Bond, James Bond." Eddie George took a quick path from the Heisman Trophy to the Associated Press NFL offensive rookie of the year. The star running back was just as sensational with the Houston Oilers as he was at Ohio State. He gained 1,368 yards on 335 carries, a 4.1 average, and scored eight touchdowns. That was good enough to easily win the balloting by a nationwide panel of sports writers announced Wednesday. George received 74 of 93 votes, far ahead of New England receiver Terry Glenn, who had eight.

George Rogers rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown, but came away impressed with his former teammates, the New Orleans Saints. The Washington Redskins remained undefeated, but Rogers said there was nothing easy about their 14-6 victory over the Saints Sunday in the Superdome. "Any time you play a team like the Saints, you know you're going to come down here and they're going to play their hardest to beat you," Rogers said. "It seemed like their defense was really ready to play."

The carnage of World War I was in its final days when the handsome doughboy in boots, Russian hat and fur gloves posed for a minute before his barracks in Siberia. His blond hair now is silver and even standing requires support, but George Roger Smith, who turns 100 today, still can remember his role in one of the most obscure and confused chapters of American military history. Smith, who lives in Rancho Palos Verdes, may be the last Southern California survivor of the 7,500 to 10,000 U.S.
