Australian teenager Lleyton Hewitt got a shot of confidence from Pete Sampras on Sunday, beating the six-time Wimbledon champion, 6-4, 6-4, to win the Queen's Club tournament at London. "He's going to be a threat at Wimbledon," Sampras said. "Winning it might take a few years, but if he gets his game going and serves like that and returns like that, he's going to be tough to beat."

A federal judge upheld a law that allows the sheriff to regulate protests like the one planned by Martha Burk at Augusta National Golf Club. Monday's ruling was only a partial victory for city officials, however. U.S. District Judge Dudley H. Bowen Jr. hasn't decided if Sheriff Ronald Strength violated his discretion by denying Burk the right to protest at the front gates of the exclusive club, where the Masters begins Thursday.

The father of 17-year-old Australian player Jelena Dokic was ejected from a Wimbledon warmup tournament in Birmingham, England, for verbally abusing officials during his daughter's match. He later was arrested for lying down in traffic and jumping on the hood of a car. Police said Damir Dokic, 40, had been drinking and was arrested "for his own safety." He was not charged and was released three hours after his arrest.

Pete Sampras hopes the scene of his greatest triumphs will help revive his sliding career. His latest try to halt the slump that has dropped him out of the top 10 for the first time since 1990 ended in a 6-4, 6-3 loss Thursday to Germany's Nicolas Kiefer at the Gerry Weber Open. It was a premature end to Sampras' grass-court preparations for Wimbledon, where he hopes the revival will begin in less than two weeks.

Andy Roddick enjoyed a commanding victory leading to Wimbledon, defeating Sebastien Grosjean, 6-3, 6-3, Sunday to win the Queen's Club tournament in London. It was the second title this year for the hard-serving American who will be a contender when Wimbledon starts June 23. "I feel I'll be better prepared than I ever have been for Wimbledon," he said. "I'm probably more confident than I ever have been, but you have to guard against that, against overconfidence.

Thomas Muster, angered earlier in the week at being seeded only seventh for Wimbledon when he was ranked No. 2 in the world, vowed to prove he could play on grass as well as clay. Those plans were wrecked Thursday when Muster aggravated a thigh injury and pulled out Wimbledon. The Austrian announced his withdrawal after hobbling through a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 loss to Brett Steven of New Zealand at the Gerry Weber Open ATP grass-court tournament at Halle, Germany.

Southeastern Conference commissioner Roy Kramer says the expanded Bowl Alliance being assembled would work better than any playoff system to determine a true college football champion. The Bowl Alliance, which was supposed to produce a true title game, pitted No. 1 Florida State against No. 3 Florida in the Sugar Bowl last season. No. 2 Arizona State met No. 4 Ohio State in the Rose Bowl and when the two higher-ranked teams lost, Florida was voted national champion.

Mary Slaney and Sandra Farmer-Patrick, suspended by track and field's international governing body for alleged drug use, said Monday night they intend to compete in this week's USA Track and Field Championships at Bloomington, Ind. That sets up a potential problem with the International Amateur Athletic Federation, the international body that has suspended them and could place sanctions against anyone who competes against them.
