CORVALLIS, Ore.  - What is said in the locker room, stays in the locker room … as a rule. But when the angry words seem to burst through brick and mortar, there was no way to ignore the significance. UCLA flat-out stunk Sunday. BOX SCORE: Oregon State 71, UCLA 67 Coach Steve Alford made that clear during a verbose 10-minute instant-review to his team following a 71-67 loss to Oregon State that denied the Bruins a chance to move closer to first-place Arizona in the Pac-12 Conference standings.

It rained when USC stepped off its plane in Portland on Wednesday night. It poured almost straight through its in-state stay that ends Sunday morning. It drizzled when the Trojans exited Oregon's Matthew Knight Arena with a loss Thursday night after a failed comeback. It fell in gobs Saturday when they entered Gill Coliseum, which they'd also leave with a loss, 80-76 to Oregon State, again following a failed USC comeback. There's just something about Oregon. It keeps raining on the Trojans' Pacific 10 Conference title hopes.

Mom and dad make everything better. Joshua Smith played his first college game in front of his parents Thursday night at Gill Coliseum, and they had a calming effect for the UCLA freshman center at the end of a tumultuous day. Smith made four free throws in the final 2 1/2 minutes to help the Bruins pull out a 62-57 victory over Oregon State on the same day he was reprimanded by the Pacific 10 Conference for critical comments about officiating earlier...

The sophomore power forward fades in and out like an old television. The freshman center's trouble fouling is getting worse, not better. The freshman shooting guard often looks afraid to shoot. Nearly halfway through the season, a young UCLA team appears to have leveled off or regressed instead of improving. "We've shown glimpses and we'll improve on stuff and then we'll just go downhill," sophomore forward Tyler Honeycutt said. The most recent example: After leading USC by two points at halftime Sunday, UCLA made only seven baskets and shot 25.9% in the second half of a 63-52 defeat.
