A nine-year Glendale city employee who allegedly stole $50,000 worth of electronic equipment from the city is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing July 21 in Glendale Municipal Court. Gerald Paul Darby, 42, was arrested last week after a monthlong police investigation following a tip from the facilities manager in the Communications Services Section where Darby worked.

A 19-year-old murder suspect died in a Glendale City Jail cell in what police believe was a suicide by hanging, officials said Thursday. David Giovanni Calix of Glendale was pronounced dead at 5:31 p.m. Wednesday, about 10 hours after he was arrested on suspicion of murder, said Glendale Police Sgt. Lief Nicolaisen. A community services officer on routine patrol of the jail discovered Calix, who was alone in his cell, hanging from a noose fashioned from his clothing, Nicolaisen said.

A former Glendale religious store owner has surrendered to court officials to begin a three-month jail sentence for possessing illegal child pornography at his home, a prosecutor said. Robert Emerson White, 47, appeared before Glendale Municipal Judge Barbara Lee Burke, who two weeks ago ordered him to serve the term in the Glendale City Jail. The former owner of A Gift Box, 114 S. Louise St., was found guilty April 1 of misdemeanor possession of prohibited material.

A former Glendale religious store owner was sentenced Thursday to three months in jail for possessing child pornography. Robert Emmerson White, 47, of Glendale was sentenced by Glendale Municipal Judge Barbara Lee Burke, who declined to follow the recommendation of three years probation in a pre-sentence report. White--a registered sex offender from a 1987 lewd conduct case--was also told to serve the recommended probation term, 100 hours of community service and seek psychiatric counseling.

Former NBA standout Sidney Moncrief has been arrested after allegedly hitting a man with a golf club at his automobile dealership in Glendale, Ariz., police said. Moncrief, 34, was booked into Glendale City Jail on suspicion of one count of aggravated assault.

Glendale police Friday arrested a man suspected of taking part in the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old youth in a gang-related, drive-by shooting in Glendale last month. Jose Onfre Carrillo, 23, was arrested at 8:30 a.m. at a Levitz furniture store in Los Angeles, where he worked, Glendale police spokesman Dean Durand said. Durand said Carrillo lives in Los Angeles. The victim was shot as he walked east on Chevy Chase Drive near San Fernando Road with two friends about 2:40 p.m. April 26. Police said the group was reportedly leaving Chevy Chase Park in Los Angeles, where they had been involved in a gang-related fight.
