She sent San Diego's departing Mayor Bob Filner some resignation "gifts" last week, among them a mirror, so he could see who was to blame for his downfall. This sort of made-for-TV event has been S.O.P. for lawyer Gloria Allred for more than 30 years. She's battled the Roman Catholic Church, the Boy Scouts, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Donald Trump and California's same-sex marriage ban. She's extended her brand with radio and TV shows and a book. She's lionized in the LGBT world for her intensity and ferocity, the same qualities that have made her name an eye-roller among those who aren't admirers.

Authorities are questioning a man who was allegedly driving a car on the 210 Freeway when a female passenger fell out, was struck by multiple vehicles and died. Los Angeles police said they believe the woman may have been physically abused the night before her death. Ricardo “Rick” Jimenez, 26, turned himself in to the Glendale Police Department on Saturday, Los Angeles police Lt. Paul Vernon said in a statement. Police had released a photo of Jimenez and asked for the public's help in finding him.  Maria Josefina "Josie" Jimenez, 22, was killed Thursday after she fell out of the passenger door of the vehicle allegedly driven by Ricardo Jimenez, police said.

After nine months of chaotic governance, and six weeks of headline-grabbing accusations of sexual harassment, the tenure of Bob Filner as mayor came to a quiet end at 5 p.m. Friday when his forced resignation became effective. At 5:01, City Council President Todd Gloria, a fellow Democrat, became acting mayor until Filner's successor is chosen in a special election. Filner, 70, who became mayor amid bold promises of a "progressive agenda" that included better neighborhood services and a greater voice for lower-income residents, was nowhere to be seen on his last day as mayor.

SAN DIEGO - As his last apparent act as mayor, Bob Filner issued a stop-work order for a Jack in the Box expansion in North Park. As his first act as acting mayor, Todd Gloria rescinded the order. At issue is whether Jack in the Box played fast and loose with city rules by rebuilding a restaurant much larger than neighbors thought was permitted. Neighbors complained bitterly that the expanded restaurant would bring added noise and traffic to the area. In an order signed Thursday, and made public Friday, Filner ordered that all work be stopped.

SAN DIEGO -- Attorney Gloria Allred, who filed the sexual harassment lawsuit that led to the resignation of Mayor Bob Filner, had three "gifts" for him Friday as his resignation becomes effective at 5 p.m. The first gift, Allred told a morning news conference, is a wallet-sized, laminated card providing the legal definition of sexual harassment. Filner should consult the card whenever he approaches a woman, Allred said. The second gift is a mirror: so Filner can look at the person most responsible for his disgraceful exit as mayor of San Diego.
