Reporting from Tempe, Ariz.-- It seemed to defy logic and gravity -- and, perhaps, some rules of common sense -- but the Angels squeezed more than half a ton of players and $318 million in outstanding contracts on one electric golf cart Saturday morning. Veteran position players who work out on the lower fields of the Tempe Diablo Stadium complex usually catch rides back to the clubhouse, but there was only one cart available when Saturday's workout was complete. New slugger Albert Pujols, signed for 10 years and $240 million, and outfielder Vernon Wells, who has three years and $63 million left on his contract, grabbed spots on the rear-facing seat that is big enough to seat two comfortably.

Rocker Ted Nugent has made it perfectly clear over the years that he won't tolerate the government trampling on his liberty or that of his bandmates. This time, however, the famously right-wing singer-guitarist might have to concede that Johnny Law had a point. According to police in Bangor, Maine , Nugent's drummer, 55-year-old Mick Brown, was arrested Sunday after allegedly stealing a golf cart from Bangor's waterfront pavilion, where Nugent had just performed with Styx and REO Speedwagon.

Thought the Casey Martin golf cart controversy was a thing of the past? Think again. It was back in 2001 when Martin, who suffers from a debilitating birth defect that makes walking painful, sued the PGA Tour for the right to drive a cart while playing tournaments. He won by citing the Americans with Disabilities Act. On Tuesday, Martin again clashed with golf officials over cart use. This time, Martin was working in his current role as the coach at Oregon, watching young players at a U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier in Oceanside, when USGA officials told him to remove his cart from the course.

Everybody knows that rock stars are legendary for their bad behavior: The Stones trashed hotel rooms, the Who smashed their instruments onstage. Pity poor Mick Brown, the drummer for rocker Ted Nugent. Now 55, the music industry veteran from Cave Creek, Ariz., was arrested following a concert in Maine for high-jinks many might consider appropriate for his, ahem, advancing age. He was busted for allegedly taking a drunken joyride on a golf cart. Brown pleaded not guilty this week to operating under the influence of intoxicants, driving to endanger, theft and assault following a July 8 concert in Bangor, Maine.

The Avalon City Council adopted an ordinance to allow golf cart permits for homeowners associations and similar nonprofit groups as part of a development agreement. Homeowners associations may then place the permitted vehicles in a pool for use by members in the city, where the driving of cars is restricted. This action will allow BCED Inc., the Irvine-based developer of the Hamilton Cove condominium project, to proceed with sales contracts that include a golf cart for each purchaser.

An E-Z-Go golf cart, a Yamaha grand piano, some Lladro figurines. It's the stuff of two long and remarkable lives - the lives of Bob and Dolores Hope. He lived to be 100, she 102, and together they hosted more than six decades' worth of presidents and stars at their Toluca Lake and Palm Springs homes. On Sept. 20 and 21, Julien's Auctions will sell more than 600 items from the Hopes' two homes, a collection including antiques, memorabilia and personal property from his show business career and their political and philanthropic work and golf avocations.

A malfunctioning golf cart, a faulty electrical system or even arson could have led to the fire that triggered the deadly explosion of a fertilizer plant in West, Texas, but federal and state officials said Thursday that their $1-million investigation had yet to find the cause. Fourteen people died in the April 17 blast, including 12 first responders who arrived nine minutes after the fire was reported - and just eight minutes before the explosion shook the town, devastated two schools and shattered a nursing home.

WASHINGTON - A round of golf with the president of the United States is a rare treat, to be sure. So hitting a hole in one while in a foursome with the commander in chief quickly became the stuff of legend on Capitol Hill after word that Sen. Saxby Chambliss had done just that. “This one's pretty special,” the Georgia Republican told reporters after returning to the Senate for a late vote. It was his second hole in one. Chambliss was part of a bipartisan outing with President Obama on Monday that included Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, a fellow Republican, and Mark Udall of Colorado, a Democrat.

O.J. Simpson found himself embroiled in another controversy Friday as L.A. City Councilman Richard Alarcon dueled with city parks officials over whether the former football star had received "special favors" while playing at Hansen Dam Golf Course. Alarcon alleges that the municipal course provided Simpson with an extra golf cart, free of charge, on two occasions so that his bodyguard could follow along to shoo away autograph hounds.

Los Angeles golfers who have complained about deteriorating carts on the city's seven public courses may not see changes any time soon. After an intense lobbying effort, the City Council rejected the recommendation of the Board of Recreation and Park Commissioners to award a 10-year contract for cart rentals to a new concessionaire, Sherman Oaks-based Ready Golf Centers. It was the city's third attempt in six years to choose a concessionaire through a competitive bidding process.

Now this is a hazard worth taking a penalty stroke for. A shark fell from the sky and landed near the 12th tee at the San Juan Hills Golf Club in San Juan Capistrano on Monday. “It was just wriggling around,” Director of Club Operations Melissa McCormack told the Capistrano Dispatch . “Honestly, this is the weirdest thing that's happened here.” The shark, a two-foot long leopard shark, was discovered by an on-duty course marshal, who loaded it onto his golf cart and drove it to the clubhouse, where he put it in a bucket of water.
