How did David defeat Goliath? According to the Bible, it was because God was on his side. But according to Malcolm Gladwell, it was largely because Goliath had a disorder known as acromegaly, a tumor on the pituitary gland. This disorder, identified in the late 19th century, manifests as gigantism, and it may affect vision. Gladwell lays out his case in his new book, "David and Goliath. " Acromegaly could account for Goliath's unusual size, he writes, and the vision problems it can cause could explain a range of details in the Bible: Goliath's slow movements; his request that David come to him rather than the other way around; his need for an attendant to walk with him onto the battlefield; even the fact that Goliath taunts David by saying, "You come against me with sticks?"

Baptist televangelist Eddie Long said Sunday from the pulpit of his packed megachurch that he would fight allegations that he coerced young male church members into having sex with him. "I'm not a perfect man, but this thing I'm going to fight. I feel like David against Goliath, but I've got five rocks and I haven't thrown one of them yet," Long told his congregation of about 6,500 in his first public comments on the scandal. Four men filed civil lawsuits last week alleging that Long had used his status as pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church to coerce them into relationships when they were in their late teens.

Malcolm Gladwell's new book, "David and Goliath," arrogantly assumes that modern readers understand the data in the Bible better than those who provided it, and insupportably attributes the biblical giant Goliath's defeat to a medical disorder, wrote Joel S. Baden and Candida Moss in their Op-Ed article Thursday. In response, readers rose to Gladwell's defense. Of the 16 who wrote letters, all but one took his side (and the one that didn't, see below, wasn't kind to Baden and Moss either)
