Arizona State quarterback Grady Benton, who leads the Pacific 10 Conference in passing efficiency, might not be able to play against USC on Saturday at Tempe, Ariz., because of a shoulder injury, Coach Bruce Snyder said. Snyder said that Benton was injured during last Saturday's 20-0 victory over UCLA, in which the second-year freshman completed 10 of 15 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. "I would doubt that he would be able to throw fluidly without pain this week," Snyder said.

Arizona State quarterback Grady Benton feared he had ruined his college career when he and teammate Derrick Land pleaded no contest to charges of using a stolen credit card last summer. They were put on three years' probation and suspended for the first game of the season. "I'd never been in any kind of trouble before, but I made a mistake," Benton said. "I was real down that I wasn't going to get another shot and that I blew it for myself."

The play of USC flanker Curtis Conway has led to speculation that he will skip his senior year and be available for the NFL draft next spring. "Curtis and I talked about that a couple weeks ago," USC Coach Larry Smith said. "After the season is over, he and I are going to sit down, and he'll decide what's best for Curtis Conway." Conway is second in the Pacific 10 Conference with an average of 173 all-purpose yards, but Smith would like him to get the ball more often.

USC is no longer last in the Pacific 10 in rushing. After a season-high 188 yards during a 31-21 victory over Washington State last Saturday, the Trojans are eighth, ahead of UCLA and Stanford. But USC, averaging only 127.2 yards on the ground, still has games to play against Arizona State, Stanford, Arizona, UCLA and Notre Dame, all of which rank among the nation's top 15 in rushing defense or total defense.

Arizona State offset the inexperience of quarterback Grady Benton with a ground attack worth 174 yards and a punishing defense Saturday night to defeat Louisville, 19-0, in the first football meeting of the schools. The Sun Devils (1-1) sacked Jeff Brohm of the Cardinals 10 times, including 3 1/2 by freshman rover Harlen Rashada, who was to have been redshirted until injuries forced Coach Bruce Snyder to use him in the second half.

Mike Price, Washington State coach, knows the value of the little things that make for big victories. "I don't know how many big plays there were in that game, but there had to be a ton of them," Price said. Those second-half big plays proved effective Saturday as No. 25 Washington State shook off a shaky start to edge Arizona State, 20-18, in a Pacific 10 Conference game at Pullman, Wash. Drew Bledsoe connected with Deron Pointer and C.J.
