Tucked away among three auto repair shops, the Granada Theatre has been producing community theater for 21 years, launching actors' careers and providing entertainment to hundreds of San Fernando Valley residents. At the request of subscribers, the theater's season will be expanded from four to five productions next year, said Jo Erickson, the theater's founder and executive director. The theater's $300,000 annual budget is derived from subscriptions, donations and fund-raisers.

There's a certain appropriateness in the choice of "Gypsy" to mark the Santa Barbara Civic Light Opera's move to its new home base in the Granada Theatre. "Gypsy" signaled the end of a Broadway era, the last big musical in the Rogers and Hammerstein form, and one of the best (with a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, how could it be otherwise?).

On April 9, 1924 -- when the Granada Theatre in Santa Barbara opened its doors for the first time -- a ticket for the world premiere of the silent film "Mlle. Midnight" cost $4, complete with a full orchestra and ballet. The Mediterranean-style theater -- bought by Warner Bros.

Stephen Sondheim's "Into the Woods" opens tonight in Granada Hills-- the first of the Granada Theatre's new "Broadway in Concert" series. The production will be a pared-down concert of the show's music. Showtime is 8 p.m. at 18167 Chatsworth St. $17.50 (818) 363-6887.
