I take felodipine for high blood pressure. I know I can't take it with grapefruit juice. I recently read that orange and apple juice also may affect medications. Is there a fruit juice I could use for taking my felodipine? How about pineapple juice? It's getting so you just don't know what is safe to eat or drink. Drug-food interactions are incredibly complicated. Grapefruit juice increases blood levels of nearly 50 medications, including felodipine. Apple and orange juice have the opposite effect for certain drugs.

Savvy Americans are eating lighter. They know they can still enjoy their traditional favorites and cut down on calories and fat, and holidays are no exception. Though the tiki cocktail was invented in Los Angeles, when it comes down to it, Angelenos don't consume a whole lot of its signature spirit: rum. Outside of select tiki bars such as Trader Vic's and Tiki-Ti, our interest in rum drinks doesn't go much further than the mojito. L.A. likes vodka and whiskey, says Craig Trager, who owns five bars including the Well and NoBar. If it weren't for his $3 margarita special at El Bar, which has a Mexican theme, he says he'd even have a hard time pushing tequila.

When I was in Washington, D.C., recently, I got turned around and took the wrong bus. When I got off, I realized I must be very close to Jaleo , the first restaurant of Spanish chef José Andrés (The Bazaar). It had just been redone and I wanted to check it out. All quiet on a Saturday afternoon. We took two seats at the bar and ordered a glass of Albariño and the cocktail a new friend had enthusiastically recommended: Hometown Hero. I loved the cocktail's tart sweetness, the almost smoky taste of the mezcal and the bitter herbs of Cocchi Americano vermouth with a high note of cinnamon.

In this drink, tequila is mellowed by sweet Cointreau and cut with tart grapefruit and lime juice. The heat comes courtesy of a couple of jalapeño slices. Say goodbye to the drinker's golden rule, "Beer before liquor, never been sicker. " A new style of mixing the two favored forms of alcohol is emerging with frothy force in L.A.'s increasingly sensual drinkscape: the beer cocktail. Novel mixtures of beer, gin, vodka, whiskey, juices, infusions and herbs, beer cocktails are pouring two of the city's most hedonistic obsessions — craft beer and mixology — into a single glass, one that showcases the properties of fine beer rather than shunting it to the side as just another ingredient.
