ARLENE WOLVERTON knew what it meant when she saw the black Cougar drive slowly past her little white frame house in the western Pennsylvania countryside, turn around and then pull into the gravel drive. Just 45 minutes earlier, she had called Jan Hvizdos, coordinator of a military-family support group, to ask how the Army would notify her if her husband, Richard, had been killed in the Persian Gulf. "If you see a car with two men in uniform," Hvizdos had said.

This week, the Iraqi Scud attack on a military barracks in Saudi Arabia left 13 members of a local Army Reserve unit dead. In 1988, three residents of the area were killed when Pan Am Flight 103 blew up over Lockerbie, Scotland. Three district soldiers died the following year when a gun turret exploded on the battleship Iowa. And in 1985, the crash in Newfoundland of a chartered plane bringing U.S.

Kmart to Close 7 Stores: The struggling Troy, Mich.-based discount retailer said the stores fell short of profit requirements. The closings will happen at the end of January and result in the loss of 649 jobs. The stores are in Colton, Lompoc, Madera, San Jose and Turlock, Calif., and in Grand Haven, Mich., and Greensburg, Pa. Kmart reported its 11th straight quarter of disappointing earnings on Thursday, with a third-quarter loss of $69 million.

A top spokesman for the nation's Roman Catholic bishops said today that Martin Scorsese's film, "The Last Temptation of Christ" is "flawed both as theology and cinema." At the same time, however, Bishop Anthony Bosco of Greensburg, Pa., who heads the communications committee of the U.S. Catholic Conference, rejected the Protestant fundamentalist drive to force Universal to abandon the film.

The U.S. Marshals Service captured escaped fugitive and convicted murderer Bernard Welch today in a suburb of Pittsburgh, the FBI said. The bureau said Welch, convicted for the 1980 shooting death of Washington cardiologist Dr. Michael Halberstam, was apprehended in Greensburg, Pa., by U.S. marshals there. A Greensburg police secretary said officers checking out a car blocking an alley found that the vehicle was stolen and traced the theft to the fugitive.

Bail of $1 million was not reduced Wednesday for a woman charged with killing her ex-boyfriend. The attorney for Yvonne Lee Twaddle, 25, of Lakeside had asked San Diego Municipal Judge Rafael Arreola to reduce her bail to $100,000. Deputy Dist. Atty. Sharon Majors said authorities are still investigating the Dec. 19 shooting of Vincent Stauffer, 31, at Twaddle's residence. Stauffer arrived at Twaddle's home after driving from Greensburg, Pa., where she once lived.

Michael Trout, a Greensburg, Pa., reservist caught in the Persian Gulf War's most devastating Scud attack, said he may owe his life to a mouse. He was playing Trivial Pursuit with his buddies in the barracks near Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, moments before an Iraqi missile hit Feb. 25. He spotted a mouse and left the group. "I'm scared of mice, so I walked away," he recalled as he recovered from wounds at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington.
