Bill Ross, varsity baseball coach at Santa Ana High School for 31 years, has been named to succeed Bob Halford as the school's athletic director. Halford resigned as Santa Ana's athletic director last month to assume a similar position at Century High in Santa Ana. Century will open in the fall with 1,000 freshmen and sophomores. Ross also has coached lower-level football at Santa Ana for 18 years and is a prominent basketball official, serving in the Orange County Officials Assn.

Greg Coombs, one of the most successful basketball coaches in Orange County the past eight years at Santa Ana High School, has resigned to assume a similar position at Century High School. Century High, also located in Santa Ana, is scheduled to open in the fall with 1,000 freshmen and sophomores. The new school will offer technical training in computers and is expected to attract many top academic students from throughout the Santa Ana Unified School District.

Denny Crum, who has led the University of Louisville to two NCAA basketball championships, will make his first appearance in a West Coast coaching clinic in 10 years Friday and Saturday at the Southern California Basketball Coaches' Assn. clinic at Century High School. Crum, who led Louisville to NCAA titles in 1980 and 1986 and six Final Four appearances, will discuss his full-court press, high-post offense and man-to-man defense at the clinic. Registration begins at 4 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m.

In the final of the Downtown Kiwanis Club tournament: Century 49, Laguna Beach 46--Century used an 18-point fourth-quarter rally to avoid an upset and at Costa Mesa High. The top-seeded Centurions (3-1) trailed until the fourth quarter, when tournament most valuable player Thomas Harmon hit a jump shot to tie it, 35-35. The unseeded Artists (4-1) led once again, 44-43, when Taylor Butcher hit a three-pointer from the top of the key, but Century had a 5-2 advantage down the stretch.

UC Irvine's Nicole Bucciarelli and Stephanie Rigamat and Cal State Fullerton's Dolores Browning were named first-team All-Big West Conference in women's soccer. Irvine's Kirsten Roy and Michelle Perez were named to the second team.
