In your assessment of President John F. Kennedy ("Historians Lost in Mists of Camelot," Part I, Nov. 21), the historians interviewed say that the seeds of the Vietnam War were planted during Kennedy's Administration, but certainly not the beginnings of the Civil Rights Act and other social reforms. I find this strangely inconsistent. But let the historians bicker over the relative accomplishments and faults of this one presidency. I want to get to larger matters. Historians shouldn't discount the feeling Kennedy gave the post-World War II generation.

A San Francisco man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of making threatening phone calls to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi because of her support for healthcare reform. Gregory Lee Giusti, 48, was arrested at his home in the city's Tenderloin district after an investigation by federal authorities, said Joseph Schadler, spokesman for the FBI's San Francisco office. Schadler said Wednesday afternoon that the criminal complaint against Giusti was under seal and would not be made public until he appeared Thursday morning in San Francisco federal court.

What's more, Hines told a Ventura County Superior Court jury that his brother and co-defendant, Alexander Hines, was not present when Jorge Rosales, 17, was shot to death in a Camarillo field three years ago. Deputy Dist. Atty. Donald C. Glynn, who said the testimony "was a total shock," implied that Gregory Hines was lying when he said he had acted alone.

Three weeks after Susan Smith was sentenced to life in prison for killing her two young sons, two granite markers were erected Saturday in the boys' memory. The monuments sit about 60 feet from John D. Long Lake, where 14-month-old Alex and 3-year-old Michael were drowned. The man accused of bludgeoning California Secretary of State March Fong Eu during a robbery at her Hancock Park home pleaded innocent today to 10 counts of burglary and robbery stemming from break-ins at six luxury homes. Gregory Lee Moore entered the plea through a public defender in Municipal Court and was ordered to return for a hearing to schedule a preliminary hearing on Dec. 5. Municipal Court Judge Glenette Blackwell ordered Moore held without bail.

A 43-year-old man who apparently had been drinking fell off a railing at the Ocean Beach pier and died early Sunday, police said. Gregory Lee Gates of San Diego was sitting on the south railing of the pier at 12:32 a.m. when he lost his balance and fell to the sand 35 feet below, landing on his head and neck, police said. The self-employed machinist was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:02 a.m. by paramedics, who administered CPR, police said.

Secretary of State March Fong Eu, who was beaten by a robber in her Hancock Park area home on Nov. 10, has returned to work, a spokeswoman said. Press aide Caren Daniels-Meade said Eu, 64, who has recovered from injuries suffered in the attack, is carrying a full schedule and has been working in the agency's Los Angeles office. Gregory Lee Moore, 27, of Los Angeles, has pleaded innocent to 10 counts of burglary and robbery stemming from break-ins at six luxury homes, including Eu's.
