If you liked Astrud Gilberto, you'll love Gretchen Parlato. Although she was born more than a decade after Gilberto recorded her classic bossa nova albums with Stan Getz, Parlato has a similarly pure, sweet voice and an intuitive knack for Brazilian rhythms. Appearing at Spazio in Sherman Oaks on Sunday night, Parlato revealed a level of musical sophistication not always present in Gilberto's singing.

MUSIC A gifted saxophonist who has backed a variety of artists including Gretchen Parlato, Taylor Eigsti and many more, Dayna Stephens finds himself on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. To help offset his impending costs, musicians including Vardan Ovsepian, Hitomi Oba and Stephens himself in a quartet with local pianist Josh Nelson are staging this marathon benefit in Little Tokyo. (Stephens' band also performs Thursday in Toluca Lake at the United Methodist Church on Cahuenga, and proceeds from the show will also go toward his medical bills.)

It's been nearly two weeks since singer Gretchen Parlato's upset victory in the 17th annual Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in Washington, D.C., but her voice is still breathless from the experience. "When it happened, I just kept saying, 'Oh, wow. Oh, wow. Wow,' " she recalls. "It was almost surreal. I knew that I had just accomplished this huge thing, but it's really still just sinking in." She's right about the accomplishment.

The music of Quincy Jones and Gerald Wilson was in the air Sunday at USC's Bovard Auditorium. And it was a very good sound--classic big band jazz, filled with brassy vitality, earthy melodies and propulsive rhythms. Performed by the Thornton Jazz Orchestra, the music was the centerpiece of the annual Fall Jazz Gala, this year titled "A Tribute to Quincy Jones and Gerald Wilson."
