Regarding the Feb. 9 story, "Celebrity Victims": After reading how wealthy entertainers were defrauded in outrageous tax-shelter schemes, I wept as I took my tax forms to H&R Block. When I recovered my composure, I asked myself this: Why were such social activists as Norman Lear, Sidney Poitier and Camille (wife of Bill) Cosby even tempted by such schemes? One would think that they use their considerable (some reformers might even say "obscene") wealth to further more worthy goals, such as low-cost housing for the underclass.

Can users file their federal taxes with just a few taps on 4-inch screens? PHOTOS: Tech we want to see in 2013 That's what I set off to find out, and the answer for most people will probably be no. The H&R Block 1040EZ 2012 app, otherwise known as H&R Block at Home, and the TurboTax SnapTax app let users fill out a tax return and electronically send it to the Internal Revenue Service.

Former H&R Block chief executive Mark Ernst, who oversaw the tax preparer's failed sub-prime lending strategy, will receive a cash severance of $2.55 million and full vesting on 762,925 stock options, the company disclosed. H&R Block had ousted Ernst as the No. 1 U.S. tax preparer suffered huge losses on sub-prime lending at its Option One Mortgage Corp. unit. New management then closed Option One. The move, plus cutting 620 jobs, will trigger about $200 million in charges and write-downs, the company has said.
