Sunday night's 85th Academy Awards style was, as Times fashion critic Booth Moore pointed out , all about extremes. While Moore was referring to the complete red carpet looks -- the gowns, the jewels and the like -- one might have come to the same conclusion even if the awards had only been broadcast from the neck up, thanks to the wildly divergent hairstyles. PHOTOS: Oscars 2013 best dressed on the red carpet Most noticeable was the full, luxurious head of hair tossed over -- and cascading down -- one shoulder.

(Disclaimer: Written while fully appreciating every second of this insane and transient journey) OK, so, throughout our entire "Frozen" press tour that began some four months ago, the question I've been asked most is: What is the hardest part about being a female director? During production, I might have picked the infamous notes sessions that occurred every 12 weeks in our story room, where about 40 of my fellow directors, writers and story artists bombarded us with notes and tore our film apart.

Re "A Worthy Cause, for Heaven's Sake," Nov. 7: I have come to withstand the incredulous fund-raising tactics by most televangelists and their flamboyant and opulent lifestyles, including the occasional sex scandal. However, I have just one question that remains: What's with their choice of hairstyles? Cesar Madrid Orange

It wasn't as noticeable from the front, but from the back you could tell that the topknot Colbie Caillat wore to complement her red Ezra Santos gown at the Grammy Awards on Sunday was created from an intricate, reverse braid. The braid snaked up from the nape of her neck and wound into a messy topknot bun that her hairstylist, Torsten White, calls “a messy, reverse-braided topknot.” White dried the singer's damp hair with the T3 Featherweight Luxe 2i dryer and then straightened it with the SinglePass flat iron.

Beauty video blogs have been gaining in popularity. Which are the best to watch? The 10 here have topped YouTube charts in the beauty category in 2012, with the most number of views as of mid-December. The star vloggers (video bloggers) range from Los Angeles YouTube veteran Blair Fowler to a nameless Russian woman dubbed "4Oxygene" to rising personalities Venus Palermo of Britain and Anastasiya Shpagina of the Ukraine, who make themselves up daily to resemble dolls. Two clear trends emerge from the pack: The continuing popularity of braided hairstyles and a new enthusiasm for "living doll" makeup tutorials.

As a homeless man, Richard Hon is used to standing in lines for a hot meal or a job interview. But until Wednesday, he had never queued up to lose something. That's when Silvia Venegas, owner of a Northridge hair salon, came to the Valley Shelter in North Hollywood to cut off the locks of dozens of homeless people like Hon. Venegas gives the free haircuts every six weeks so that the homeless can have a better shot at a job, or just feel better about themselves.

With corsets, push-up bras and girdles making a comeback, can rollers and hair dryers be far behind? In a word, no, say Clay Wilson and Alex Doyle of Doyle Wilson salon in West Hollywood, who recently showed their take on the curve and structure of hair for the '90s. "It's a set and curl with no, or very little, comb out," Wilson said of the anything-but-natural looks gallivanting down the runway.

Looking for the hippest hair of the summer? Some stylists say look no farther than the latest scandal sheets. In its recent presentation of summer fashions, the Vidal Sassoon salon stressed looks inspired by the Hollywood celebs most often seen on the pages of the Star and the National Enquirer. For men, Sassoon showed wispy, dangling locks reminiscent of Alec Baldwin and Kiefer Sutherland, and the slicked-back, gel-laden image of Lorenzo Lamas.

Beyonce has changed her hairstyle twice in the last couple of weeks, cutting her long locks into a pixie cut, then showing up at a lunch with her hair (more likely extensions) longer in front. Word went around that she was having regrets about the shorter style. Which left us wondering what style hair (or wig) she'd wear on stage? The question was answered when she performed at the V Festival in Chelmsford, England on Saturday in a below-the-chin sleek blond bob. Over the objection of defense attorneys, a judge decided Wednesday that prosecutors may show jurors a portfolio of modeling photos taken of accused murderer Diana Haun in the 1980s. Prosecutors want to use the snapshots--which show the 36-year-old defendant in a variety of glamorous poses with different outfits and hairstyles--to bolster their claim that she altered her appearance to kidnap Sherri Dally. Grammy nominee for Album of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance, Sara Bareilles, stepped out onto Sunday's red carpet wearing her hair wavy and heavily textured. Her hair stylist Rolando Beauchamp calls it “rough, beautiful hair to complement her soft, feminine Blumarine gown.” To achieve the look, Beauchamp started by prepping her damp hair with Garnier Fructis Style Deconstructed Beach Chic Texturizing Spray. He created the texture by rough-drying the hair and then twisting parts of it into loose cornrow braids from the front to the back of Bareilles' head.

Some say Myron Kunin never met a business he didn't like. Others insist he never saw a piece of art he didn't like. Both are understatements. Kunin built the Regis hair salon empire from his parents' chain of department store barbershops and also built a renowned American art collection, as well as donating to museums, galleries and universities throughout the United States. Kunin died Wednesday in Minneapolis from pneumonia after battling leukemia for nearly a year, his family announced.

Kay Killmeyer walked into Mitch & Co. Haircutters in Irvine on a recent Saturday morning with short, curly gray hair. Within 20 minutes, she had collar-length, strawberry blond tresses. Then she had a burgundy bob. Soon after that, a waterfall of ash-blond curls tumbled past her shoulders--all without the aid of wigs, dyes or scissors.

He smokes, he enjoys an occasional beer or three, he has been described as a guy who looks more like a plumber than a professional baseball player ... how can the average fan not relate to San Diego Padre reliever Rod Beck? Beck is back in the big leagues, with his signature Fu Manchu mustache but without the shaggy, shoulder-length mullet, after missing 2002 because of elbow reconstruction surgery and spending the first two months of 2003 in the minor leagues.

LONDON - If gymnast Olga Korbut were competing on the present-day world stage, no doubt there would be fierce debate on such pressing issues like hairstyle and makeup choices. You can just imagine this on Twitter: Aren't Korbut's pigtails untidy? Maybe the hashtags should be #frivilousitems and #lameconcerns. It has gotten truly silly when it comes to the debate about champion teen gymnast Gabby Douglas and her hair. Actually, it had gotten silly on Twitter and Facebook long before the start of the London Olympics.
