Cal State trustees formally launched a nationwide search Wednesday for president of Ventura County's public university, creating a committee to find a replacement for outgoing administrator Handel Evans. Governing board Chairman Laurence K. Gould will be joined by Trustees William D. Campbell, Debra S. Farar and Robert Foster on the panel charged with filling the top job at Cal State Channel Islands, planned to open in fall 2002.

One would hardly know it from your coverage of Handel Evans' crowing, but the CSU trustees have not committed to convert the Camarillo State site into CSU Channel Islands. They have wisely decided only to move the CSU Northridge Extension facility to a portion of the former hospital's grounds. Perhaps their caution is due to their recognition that there is no "crisis" of access to college for Ventura County residents. The study of access commissioned by Evans shows combined UC and CSU attendance in Ventura County slightly higher than in two comparable Southern California counties, Riverside and San Bernardino.

It is a luxury to look in the rearview mirror as we drive down the road toward the establishment of a Cal State University in Ventura County. We have traveled far in a short space of 12 months and particularly since January 1996, when the chancellor pledged his commitment to the establishment of a CSU campus in the region. In January 1998, that pledge became real with the announcement that the governor's budget identified funds to renovate the Camarillo State Hospital to house the existing off-campus center of Cal State Northridge.

A forum to answer questions about the new Cal State Channel Islands campus will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the Camarillo City Council chambers. The school's president, J. Handel Evans, and a number of staff members will be on hand to answer questions about the campus, which is scheduled to open in a year. In one of the largest charitable gifts in county history, Oxnard rancher and philanthropist John S. Broome has donated $5 million to help establish a new library at Ventura County's emerging state university. The gift will lay the groundwork for building a state-of-the-art library at the new Cal State Channel Islands campus, which is being reconstructed from the former state mental health hospital in Camarillo.
