The long-awaited new commercial jetliner from Boeing features larger windows, better air quality in the cabin areas, LED lighting,  bigger seats and other cushy comforts. So when will you be able to fly on one? November, if you're in Tokyo (or going to be there). All Nippon Airways plans special inaugural passenger flights from Tokyo's Narita International Airport to Hong Kong on Oct. 26 with a return flight the next day. The plane also will fly "excursion flights" from Narita on Oct. 28 and 29. (Seats on these chartered flights were offered lottery-style earlier in September.)

Travelers around the Pacific were stopped in their tracks by Friday's earthquake and subsequent tsunami. Hundreds of Japan-bound flights were canceled over the course of the day, thousands of people were stranded at Japanese theme parks; hotels in Hawaii evacuated guests in the middle of the night to avoid surging water; and campers were evacuated from costal state parks in Northern California. The U.S. State Department posted a travel alert, strongly urging "U.S. citizens to avoid tourism and non-essential travel to Japan at this time.

All Nippon Airways, or ANA, is offering special round-trip fares starting at $789 for its new nonstop service from Los Angeles (LAX) to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (HND), which will begin Oct. 31. The deal: The promotion, called Limited Eco Value Fares-Haneda Inaugural Special is available online only (no phone reservations) for round-trip airfares starting at $789 on weekdays and $829 on weekends; prices exclude some taxes and fees. The flights will use the new international terminal at Haneda Airport, which is scheduled to open Oct. 21. One advantage of Haneda is that it's much closer to downtown Tokyo than the better-known Narita International Airport . When: The offer is good for flights through Dec. 10, subject to availability, but you must book by Oct. 28. Tested: I checked online and found a flight leaving Los Angeles on Monday, Nov. 8, and returning Monday, Nov. 15, for $808.

A week of inspections ordered after the Aug. 12 crash of a Japan Air Lines jumbo jet uncovered "abnormalities" in the tail sections of 23 Boeing 747s but none serious enough to pose a direct safety hazard, the Transport Ministry said Saturday. The full cause of the accident has not been determined, but the tail section of the plane disintegrated less than 15 minutes after it left Tokyo's Haneda airport. The crash killed 520 people, the worst single-plane accident in aviation history.
