The city of Stanton has suffered an identity crisis at times: It wasn't always sure it wanted to be a city. A 16-square-mile area called Benedict became incorporated on May 23, 1911, in protest against the plans of its neighbor to the north, Anaheim, to turn the territory into a sewer farm. The Hansen Dam Recreation Center is an intersection in the San Fernando Valley where open space and the suburbs clash head-on, a place blessed with willows and water and plagued by homeless encampments, crack dens and off-roaders. It is also prone to fires, such as one May 13 that destroyed 80 acres of nesting grounds for a remarkably diverse avian population, including one of the world's rarest songbirds, the federally endangered least Bell's vireo.

Last week, Los Angeles City Councilman Richard Alarcon alleged that the municipal golf course had provided Simpson with an extra golf cart, free of charge, on two occasions so that his bodyguard could follow along to shoo away autograph hounds.

In a coup for Councilman Alex Padilla, the Los Angeles City Council voiced unanimous support Tuesday for a proposed $10-million sports academy for low-income children at the Hansen Dam Recreation Area. Glenn Bates was impressed Saturday as he strolled around--shirtless and in shorts--during the grand opening of two new lakes at the Hansen Dam Recreation Area. As a kid in the 1970s, Bates fished and swam at the old Holiday Lake, which closed in the early 1980s because silt from the nearby Tujunga Wash filled its waters. On Saturday he joined an estimated 3,000 people who celebrated the new lakes' debut with a free party featuring music, food and local politicians.
