Three people were killed and two injured Sunday when a driver suspected of being under the influence of alcohol drove a 1993 Ford Explorer off a freeway offramp and into a tree in San Juan Capistrano, authorities said. California Highway Patrol investigators said three passengers, two men and one woman, died instantly, and the driver and a fourth passenger were taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo in critical condition.

The Dallas Cowboys were dealt the first setback of Super Bowl week Monday when their quarterback acknowledged that he can't use the NFC championship victory as inspiration. Because Troy Aikman doesn't remember it. Doesn't remember completing 14 of 18 passes. Doesn't remember throwing for two touchdowns. Doesn't remember leading the Cowboys to a 38-21 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

The news accounts, now 70 years old, offer only fragments of the "ghastly drama" that surrounded the marriage of Mary Kenan Flagler Bingham, "the richest woman in America." She was the widow of Standard Oil co-founder Henry Flagler and her estate was worth between $60 million and $100 million. Her bridegroom was Judge Robert Worth Bingham, a Kentucky lawyer without independent means. Their wedding in 1916 made headlines, even in New York. And so did her mysterious death eight months later.

In other competition: WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Overcoming a 14-point first-half deficit, the South rallied to bury the West in women's basketball, 71-57, at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion. The West, which led, 27-13, midway through the first half, shot just 25% after intermission. West center Sara Wilson, a Hart High graduate who now plays at Oregon, made one of five field-goal attempts and finished with five points in a team-high 26 minutes.

It was the wedding to end all weddings, and the media event to end all media events: the marriage in 1956 of American movie star-glamour queen Grace Kelly to the dashing Prince Rainier of Monaco. Caught up in this fast-lane fairy tale were six young women chosen to be Grace Kelly's bridesmaids. And now one of them has written a book about it, titled "The Bridesmaids." Author Judith Balaban Quine was one of the six who wore a daffodil yellow dress the day Kelly married her prince, along with Maree Frisby, Rita Gam, Carolyn Scott, Sally Parrish and Bettina Thompson.
