A black teenager said he was grabbed by three white youths who yelled racial slurs and dragged him alongside their moving vehicle. Baron Manning, 17, said he suffered an eye injury and abrasions. Manning said the boys called him over to the vehicle early Friday, grabbed him through an open window by his shirt and dragged him until the cloth ripped and he fell near the back wheels. "He indicated to me that his head was about an inch from the wheel of the vehicle," the Rev.

Firing one handgun while he reloaded a second, a white man drove through residential neighborhoods northwest of the city late Friday, shooting first at Orthodox Jews walking home from temple, then at an African American man and his two children and finally at an Asian American couple. The black man, former Northwestern University basketball coach Ricky Byrdsong, was killed by a bullet that struck him in the back and tore through his aorta. Six Jews were wounded during their Sabbath.

In a precedent-setting case, Pizza Hut settled a lawsuit filed by African American family members who said they were harassed, threatened with a mop handle and taunted with racial slurs at a restaurant in 1995. The settlement follows a federal judge's ruling last summer that companies can be held liable if their employees commit hate crimes. The amount of the settlement was not disclosed, but Pizza Hut admitted no wrongdoing.

Frank Caruso, 19, instead was convicted of hate crimes against both the beaten boy, Lenard Clark, and one of the boy's friends, Clevon Nicholson, 14. He also was convicted of aggravated battery against Lenard.

A black woman from Minnesota has been indicted on federal fraud charges for an alleged extortion scheme involving packages defaced with racist epithets that she shipped to prominent blacks and to herself, federal prosecutors said in Chicago. The nine-count indictment charges that Angela Jackson, 27, the owner of Afro-Centric Arts in St. Paul, smeared feces and racially offensive messages on packages sent to phony accounts she set up, then demanded $150,000 in damages from UPS.

Two white men accused of brutally beating a 13-year-old black youth who ventured into their Chicago neighborhood pleaded guilty to reduced charges and received probation and community service. Victor Jasas, 18, and Michael Kwidzinski, 21, had been charged with attempted first-degree murder and other offenses in the 1997 attack that left Lenard Clark brain damaged. They pleaded guilty to battery after one witness was killed and another one vanished.
